Scared about catching latest Covid strain

Thegrassroots26 · 16/09/2025 20:17

Work in large secondary with many young people in one place. In classrooms all day. I don’t do well when I get sick and I’m scared of getting ill again as lots of kids seem to have a ‘cold’.
Am I being ridiculous? Every time I catch it I end up so unwell and in bed for weeks.

Covid spread is airborne!

This is exactly what you would expect as the schools had not reopened. Let’s see what happens in 2/3 weeks time and beyond. This strain is going to put a lot of pressure on hospitals.

Haven’t heard anything about the latest Covid strain. Are you testing then? Didn’t even k ow that was still available.

The hospitals are testing and monitoring. Obviously most people won’t end up there hopefully.

I've just had it and I was really ill, I'm still not great and it's been two weeks now. I'm definitely going to get the jab privately now, but I also don't get paid if I don't work so I lose a lot more than 98 quid.

Did you do a Covid test?

Overtheatlantic · 17/09/2025 16:13

I paid £85 for a COVID vaccine on Monday but with some upcoming travel I thought it was worth it.

landlordhell · 17/09/2025 16:13

Interesting as I’ve just got over ‘a cold’ that I caught from my adult DD who had just started commuting for work. Both of us started with sore throat and extremely runny noses and usual cold stuff. What was weird is that we felt bette r then relapsed and it took over two weeks to feel better . It reminded me of Covid. . I rarely get a cold and if I do shift it within a few days.

Objectionhearsayspeculation · 17/09/2025 18:08

As someone on week four of it and still feeling horrible if you can afford the vaccine take it. I only managed getting dressed this week for the first since catching it and anything more strenuous than looking after my eldest DC is just not happening. It’s also throwing me random symptoms all the time yesterday was the return of razor throat, today is the inability to breathe. Dd had teeth sore yesterday and intermittent hot and cold spells today. We have been playing bingo with the random symptoms that pop up.

TheOliveFinch · 17/09/2025 18:57

I’ve currently got it tested positive yesterday and feeling pretty grim. Sore ribs from so much coughing, not sleeping, no appetite and brain fog has been much worse than last time

Also only very recently had the flu one, so wouldn’t get the Covid one until October, and by then I could’ve caught it already, so is it worth paying almost £100..?

Can I ask why? I’m not in the UK and am eligible for both flu and Covid vaccines - I have them at the same time, one in each arm.

CandidOP · 18/09/2025 08:16

For the first time last year I decided to have the jabs together rather than a couple of weeks apart. Never again - I was in bed for several days and felt pretty terrible. I guess my system can't take too much at once, so I will be reverting to spacing them out this year.

Harriet9955 · 18/09/2025 08:28

Yes it's a worry. My friend had it recently and ended up very unwell and with some hemorrhages behind her eyes which have affected her eyesight temporarily.

Missymarple · 18/09/2025 08:57

My DH and I both tested positive and it is currently kicking our arses. The only other time I have had COVID, I lost my sense of smell for a few days and had a bit of a cough but was fine. This is totally different - really upset stomachs, proper shaking with cold then boiling hot, head all over the place, throat like razor blades. We've been in bed for almost a full week with it so far.

Ironically I have an appointment next month for my flu vaccine (I get them on the NHS) so will be asked if I want the COVID one then. But I would say do what you can to avoid this nightmare, it's completely taken us out of the game.

Xenomoth · 18/09/2025 11:57

I work in a school and have caught the current strain. It’s the third time but the worst I’ve felt with Covid yet, day 7 and still a strong positive with all the symptoms. This latest bout has made me reconsider working in a school as well. Yes, you could catch it anywhere, but I’m in a warm room with children coughing and sneezing constantly-the risks have got to be higher than other jobs I could do!

PaperbackWrighter · 23/09/2025 15:59

I think the only sense in spacing out covid and flu jabs is if you can't have injections in one of your arms (I can't my right), and you don't want 2 jabs in one arm. I'm eligible for both vaccines and they told me at the pharmacy where I'll have it done that I can space them a week apart for that reason. Otherwise no problem having one each in either arm at same time.

PaperbackWrighter · 23/09/2025 16:01

Or if having both together previously made you feel terrible like a PP. But a week between should be fine.
