A quick 'what would you do' about my DD (8 months old)

DD had vomiting starting wed am last week. She then went on to have diarrhea thurs evening. She had several bouts of this on fri, three on sat and only one yesterday.

It became obvious yesterday that she wasn't weeing very much. Two wet nappies all day. This morning she only hd a very slightly wet nappy after all night.

I've rung NHS direct and they've said to encourage fliuds - but that is what we were doing yesterday. My gut feeling was to take her down to the local kids a and e. What would you do?

I would go with your gut feeling.

There isn´t much they will be able to do, unless she is dehydrated. There are lots of nasty tummy bugs around.

Get as many fluids down her as possible... you really don't want her to get dehydrated, as rehydrating her in hospital means a tube up her nose, and believe me, that is horrible.

flossish · 02/06/2008 07:28

DP has gone to work now with the car. I'm going to take her to GP I think - does it sound excessively gross to leave her in the nappy she's had overnight which has so little wee in it?

I'm a nurse so I know what might be. I'd rather a tube up her nose than kidney failure! And we have been pushing fliuds already. I should have got up with her at 2/3 and offered her a drink.

I have a dr's app for 9.20 she's had another wee so probably now he/she will think I'm stir crazy...

Hello floss

Better safe than sorry at this age, isn't it? I've been at the doctor's a couple of times with ds2 when it was maybe not strictly necessary, but I did want the peace of mind - the hospitalisation and the tachypnoea when he was 3 weeks have made me very nervous careful indeed

Good luck. Maybe she's rallied now, but I reckon after that little wee I'd want her seen oo.

Take the nappy with you and explain that this is an all night and early morning nappy. It can't hurt.
How is her Fontenel(sp)?

flossish · 02/06/2008 08:55

she got very upset when I tried to feel. she's not really drinking anything this morning. She's still in the same nappy. I'll change it once it's been seen. I'm all for other people going to gp etc when they are worried about their DC berolina - however when it is my own I worry about looking like a nutter!! How is all with you?

are you bf ing?

solo · 02/06/2008 09:01

and if so, is she taking any milk at all from you?

flossish · 02/06/2008 09:04

Still BF at night if requested! I offered this morning - wasn't fussed. Had half her milk at 11pm at no more since. Not really drinking her water today either whic she had previously been downing. Has also been having some diaralyte.

I'd take her to GP. Don't think anymore about it, just go. You know it makes sense.

flossish · 02/06/2008 20:16

Took her and of course she is fine. Weeing more today although still has a dodgy tum. As expecting felt like a right tool presenting this bouncing baby to the dr who was absolutely fine!

Well, good, at least you know for sure.

saadia · 03/06/2008 07:27

glad she's OK, flossish, that always happens. One time ds1 has a very high temp for ages, we were frantic took him to A&E and temp had come down and he looked fine. I'm sure drs are used to this.
