Does anyone know anything about the heart?

Last year I had an ablation on my heart due to it keep racing.

Whilst they were trying to record my heart racing, they discovered that I had an ectopic heart beat! (unbeknown to me).

Since I had my heart zapped I have had no real trouble until tonight and would never have known I had an ectopic heart beat.
It feels like its speeding up for a couple of beats and then slows down to a normal pace. Then its ok for a few minutes and then it repeats itself again. It doesn't hurt, but obviously quite unsettling.

I guess what I trying to say is this the start of the racing again (although last time my heart would race for a couple of hrs)or is theis the ectopic that they had discovered?

sounds like it could be either

see your gp

maidamess · 01/06/2008 20:47

katie it may be coincidental but you are the third poster including me in a week to be complaining of a racing irregular heart beat!

dinny · 01/06/2008 20:48

Hi, Katie,

My Dad has had something very similar (they think it is something called late-onset ARVC, NOT that I am saying you have the same) but basically it causes arrythmias.

he has had four ablations over 3 years and each time the prob has recurred as the rogue electrical pathway can recur.

ARVC and similar conditions are known to have "hot phases", my Dda definitely has periods when he is stable and periods when he has lots of arrythmias.

have a loom at this website for further info
www.cardiomyopathy.org/

Yes I will, unfortunately our surgery is moving to a new site, and tomorrow is the first day. I guess they will be very busy.

Things like this always happen to me on weekends etc.

I do hope they don't want me to wear another monitor as I am allergic(the only thing) to plasters.

Unable to help but just wanted to say what a poetic thread title this is!

dinny · 01/06/2008 20:50

just to stress, am NOT suggesting you have any cardiomyopathy, just that the CMA site contains some really helpful info about arrythmia and some good links

katiekkrruunncchh · 01/06/2008 20:52

Maidamess, must be something in the water!

I do hope not Dinny, it scared me enough last time they ablated me.

yeah, scary stuff, poor you

my dad's thing is really really rare

katiekkrruunncchh · 01/06/2008 21:35

Thank goodness its starting to calm.

are you aware of any particular triggers?

I have an occasional benign tacchycardia (rapid heart beat) and I KNOW my triggers are:

  • stress
  • extra caffeine
  • standing up too quickly
  • getting too hot
  • MSG in chinese food

Glad it's calming down - things to do with the heart are so scarey, aren't they?

katiekkrruunncchh · 01/06/2008 21:42

As far as I know there have been no triggers. Up until last year, before I had surgery it came and went with no rhyme or reason. A bit like tonight, although they were alot shorter.

What does ablated mean. I have recently been referred to cardiology due to a possible ectopic heat beat. Going at the end of this month

katiekkrruunncchh · 01/06/2008 22:01

They go in at both sides of the groin through vein/artery up to your heart, and burn the extra pathway that has developed in the heart.

It doesn,t actually hurt, just scary as suddenly you can feel your heart racing.

I'm no expert, but it could be atrial fibrillation, which can be caused by almost anything

www.afibbers.org/atrial_fibrillation.htm

I have this all the time, mine's caused/triggered by a weak mitral valve.

dinny · 01/06/2008 23:03

what does your cardiologist think, Katie?

many causes of arrythmia - most fairly harmless

Miaou · 01/06/2008 23:06

katie, no idea about the heart stuff, but I am allergic to plasters too - can they not attach it with surgical tape? I've had canulas attached with that with no probs, could that work for you?

gerbra · 01/06/2008 23:06

Hi Katiek,
just wanted to say I've had an irregular heatbeat for over 10 years and have just had my 10-year MOT and there are no problems. Even though my beat it irregular, it's benign.

I do think triggers like excessive caffeine or smoking or stress can make it worse.

Best to get it checked out if you're worried though. Like you, mine is completely painless, but very unsettling, especially when you're trying to sleep.

Hope you get it sorted.

katiekkrruunncchh · 05/06/2008 23:07

I finally went to the GPs today as it happened a lot last night too. He thinks its an ectopic heart beat, but wants me to have an ECG next week. He aslo had a good listen to my heart and said that it was behaving - typical. But if it continued then he would referr me back to the cardiologist.

PS, Drs didn't move last weekend its this weekend! typical!

Sorry for not replying sooner but have to rely on DHs computer when he is in the Country and mine is at the menders!for the 2nd time in as many months!
