Agonising foot and leg cramps every night

Has anyone had such bad foot and leg cramps that they regularly lose hours of sleep at night, then experience no problems with cramps in the day?

im finding it really hard to live with and I’ve tried all the tips people give you like magnesium supplements, drinking more water, stretching out the cramps as they start. Mine start and just come back over and over all night and are really intense.

any tips for making this better?

I used to get this regularly and salt/electrolytes helps. I used to have a cup a soup or some toast with marmite on. Try not to drink too much water before going to bed as that has a diluting effect on electrolytes. I found that a lot of walking or exertion made it worse too

I was diagnosed with some vitamin deficiencies and since addressing those it has mostly gone away

My Nan used to sleep with a bag of sherry corks! Worked for her!

Updating to say I have been using magnesium spray on my legs each night before bed as well as continuing to take oral magnesium, I’m eating a banana a day, having electrolytes in my water each evening as well as drinking even more each day and, touch wood, I have not have leg cramp for 5 days. I do however have to get up to pee all the time!

I wear socks in bed (ones that cover calves) take electrolytes and drink more water and eat a banana a day it seems to be helping mine. I was getting no sleep due to the frequency. always worse if I've been drinking.
re: electrolytes I was using the fizzy ones I've now got tablet form not sure if there is any real difference.

Eating lots of pumpkin seeds help me with the need to pee at night, that and obviously not drinking too close to bed.

I had the same thing… tried electrolytes, magnesium spray & bananas and they didn’t really help. I then started on Evorel Sequi HRT patches and the cramps disappeared almost overnight!

Tontostitis · 14/09/2025 10:06

This started with me with menopause and is really well managed with my HRT and magnesium supplements half an hour before bed. You have my sympathies OP it's absolutely horrible I couldn't sleep properly for months.

Edit to add my patches are Evorel too

For me the shoes I wear that day impact whether I get leg and foot cramps that night. Also sitting for long periods at my desk and not enough walking plus hydration as PPs have said.

This was a symptom of perimenopause for me, leg cramps so bad I'd wake up in agony, unable to move my leg till the cramp went. Starting hrt sorted it immediately.
