Wheat-free? I want to try being wheat-free for two weeks

just to see if it makes me feel better and less bloated.

What can I do for breakfast? I usually have toast, don't like milk or porridge, can't face fruit first thing and don't have time to cook anything.

I know I am being awkward , but hoped someone could help?

Sainsburys and tesco sell Nature's Path Mesa Sunrise flakes that are wheat and gluten free and very nice. they are my breakfast mainstay....along with rice crispies!

Sainsbury's free from range has English muffins which are quite nice toasted with jam.....they are my weekend treat. also most of the gluten free breads that are available make OK toast. not great for sarnies, but passable toasted.

Or what about a wheat free muesli? There are a few available, if it's only wheat you are avoiding and not other gluten containing cereals.

What about a boiled or poached egg? Only takes 3 or 4 minutes, so not very long.

If you put the pan on first, and then make your tea/coffee, the eggs will take hardly any time.

There's a great wheat-free bread called Stamp's New York Deli bread. You can get it in Sainsbury's and Waitrose. It's quite a dense bread, made with rye and other things, and is flavoured with caraway seeds. I don't like it just as bread, but toasted it is nice, or toasted with a poached egg on.

The Stamp bread is delicious, so is the village bakery.

There are loads of free from things in the supermarket now, cakes, biscuits, croissants and so on but the rye breads are good too.

They can still make me bloated though, any toast is a bit heavy even if it's wheat free. Sometimes if I'm in a rush I have a oat cereal bar.

If you're the only one eating the bread it might be worth freezing it in slices. Some of the ones I buy are three pounds or so and no-one else likes them and they go mouldy before I can finish them.

I would go gluten free first, then if that makes you feel better try oats, rye etc.

If you are doing a 2 week trial I would throw money at breakfast and get free from sweet rolls, english muffins etc. from supermarket. Plenty of time to economise if it works!

Try the german bread, rye bread, it takes a bit of getting used to. I would suggest the Schneider Brot one. You can get it in tesco for about 60p, if you get similar in a health shop its costs more than double.

Its very filling, and really good as an 'open' style sandwiche. You can toast it too, and it gets nice and chewy.

Buckwheat pancakes with fruit. I used to make a three day batch and keep it in the fridge. Once you get in to the habit they only take a few minutes, and they're lovely.

rice cakes, rice cakes, rice cakes- or one of the wheat free breads.

Are you wanting to be GLUTEN FREE or WHEAT FREE- there is a difference! Some of the WHEAT free breads etc contain gluten s they are made with rye and oats and buckwheat.

I have been wheat free for 10 years- not easy, but I have found a wheat free bread that suits- it's from Waitrose- Antoinette somebody or other!

girlnextdoor · 01/06/2008 12:52

p.s. Do read the labels- rye, oats, barley and buckwheat all contain gluten so you need to check.

GreenEggsAndSpam · 01/06/2008 13:15

Loads of ideas there - thank you.

What I would like is for my tummy to not bloat up so much, so I am not sure if it is wheat or gluten I should be avoiding?

You'd be best avoiding gluten altogether for a month, then adding in cereals that have lower levels of gluten- starting with oats.
