Sprained ankle and driving - help!

I sprained my ankle for the 1st time yesterday and now really worried about how I’m going to drive the children to school on Tuesday!

Yesterday I did the whole rest, ice, elevate. This morning it’s still quite swollen and painful to hobble around on.

is there anything I can do to make sure I’m ok driving in a couple of days? Or is that completely out of the question??

Buy an ankle support bandage as you will feel much more secure when wearing it

don’t wear it all the time - just when driving or walking

Ankle strap and ibuprofen.

It depends on how bad the sprain is and which ankle it is!! The key test would be can you change gear if driving a manual and more importantly can you do an emergency stop.

dont put your children’s lives at risk

Would you be insured if you had an accident?

Thissickbeat · 31/08/2025 09:03

Have you had it x-rayed? My broken ankle wasn't that swollen.
You cannot drive if its painful and swollen, at best, you'll end up with longer term damage at worst you won't be able to stop.
A bad sprain will need a boot.

If you can drive safely you’re insured to do so.

If you can’t you’ll have to make alternative arrangements.

Id get it x rayed to make sure it’s definitely not a bone and is indeed ligaments/tendons. But that won’t necessarily make healing quicker.

But how to aid healing depends on the type of injury. For example a fracture you may be told to immobilise it and not weight bare but a sprain you may be told to exercise it gently and start to walk on it.

Any advice we give not knowing the absolute diagnosis could end up making it worse!

Providing you can do an emergency stop, you take paracetamol, pull up your big girl pants, possibly put boots on if you can fork the support, and crack on. This is where an automatic has even more virtues.

DH's 'sprained ankle' turned out to be broken in 2 places.
I'd be getting it x-rayed.

If it’s the throttle ankle/foot, having an automatic won’t make a difference.

Needs to be xrayed

I remember stuffing it in a boot to drive but ideally you should have it checked over. Keep trying to move it while elevated, draw numbers and letters in the air with your toes to gently flex the ankle. Arnica gel and nurofen if you can tolerate it.
