Following last weeks smear test, my results came this morning and I've got high grade abnormal cells, they want me in hospital this wednesday for colposcopy tests

they are doing something called a heated wire loop, with a local anasthetic ... sounds horrid, anyone had this?

Been there!

Take a couple of paracetemol about an hour before you go.

If you're not driving and you have someone with you, and you're SUPER nervous, you can ask your GP to prescribe you one of two diazepam to take the edge off.

I watched it on a TV monitor, but I'm weirdy like that!

I hardly bled at all afterwards.

I echo everyone's posts though, it's not pleasant, but it's not the worst thing and it's over quickly and you're doing the right thing, getting it seen to asap!

Like others, I have had (touch wood) normal smears since then (mine was back in 2002).

I saw mine on screen too, it was the black stuff, and only that that scared me, but apparently just normal burnt cells.

expatinscotland · 31/05/2008 23:36

it was pretty cool seeing the cervix, though.

VictorianSqualor · 31/05/2008 23:38

Did you not find it absolutely mad the size difference?
Obv I knew in reality the size but hard to comprehend the size difference.
Almost forgot I said you were scary on that other thread

expatinscotland · 31/05/2008 23:40

Well, I had my loop before I had kids so I'm not sure how my cervix looks now.

But it did look like it was taking up the whole screen then.

I also had a dose of diazepam when I went for it, then went home with my pal and got stoned, so that probably added to the trippiness of the experience.

I had it in January and a second minor one in April to check everything was OK. It's not the most wonderful way to spend an hour but it's not as bad as some people had made it out to me, and you can watch the procedure on a monitor so you know exactly what's happening. I can see why some people of a squeamish disposition might be iffy with it but it's OK. anyway, you have to have it for your own protection so might as well bite the bullet and take a few deep breaths, get on with it. Good luck.

had this 4 yrs ago tbh was uncomfortable but not painful afterward was discharge and period pains and admit i felt a bit weak so lay in bed with hot water bottle, the embarrassing thing was the smell as obvoiusly its being burnt away, nurse came in and went "urgh burning, you been doing a loop?" and then saw me, i went, "im right fucking here you know" and she chased me down the hall after apologising lots, bitch. she had a point though.

Oh I wish i'd seen this before-I had to go yesterday for a colposcopy as I have CIN3 cells, I was in such a state that when the Dr told me I would have to have a cone biopsy I couldn't have it done there any then as I was too nervous so I am having to go back and have it under a general. But they don't have appointments until September!

lottiesmummy · 08/06/2008 09:23

It really isnt that bad honest, I didnt feel it while it was being done, I was very nervous too (((hug)))
