Breast excretions - are these normal?

Late 50's, 2 kids, post menopause, on HRT...

I (more correctly my partner!) have found that if my left breast and nipple is caressed/squeezed etc then a thin/sticky/pale/cream coloured liquid comes out. It looks and feels much like normal breast milk.

The right breast is the same BUT the fluid is grey in colour.

Questions: Is it normal to secrete breast milk at my age? Is this breast milk? Why the difference in colour?

Many thanks.

(No known breast issues etc)

Hello.
You should go and see your GP about this. There are several possible causes for the breasts secreting fluid at your age, and you need to find out the reason why yours are doing this.

Possibly, but you do need to make a GP appointment on Monday because possibly not Flowers

It’s best to get it checked out. Mine do this and I had a thorough examination (ultrasound, mammogram) and then they concluded it’s just milk ducts but they will want to run the tests first

Thanks. Was the milk a different colour (as mine is) on each side or both the same colour?

Nipple discharge - NHS Link

Hmmm thanks. That's a worrying read.

I have this due to high prolactin levels. This is caused by the medication I take. Several medications can cause this. But also stress and some injuries can increase prolactin. A simple blood test would check your levels. Please don’t panic.

I’ve got this in one breast only, they did a load of checks and concluded it’s fine. They could operate but if it isn’t bothering me I can leave it, they said to come back if it started ‘gushing’ or worrying me. Get it checked out and put your mind at rest.

@Zebedee999 have you seen your doctor?

No. The reason being I have a serious health issue that started last week that I'm under the Dr for. Last time I had it I nearly died of sepsis so dealing with that first. When that is sorted will move to the breast milk issue ty.

Definitely get it sorted. Nipple discharge can be one of the symptoms of breast cancer, not to worry you but please go the the gp

BluePine · 05/09/2025 19:08

My discharge was grey. It used to crust over and stay a grey colour. Though sometimes it was a sort of creamy colour I think

Boriswentcamping · 05/09/2025 22:10

ask for prolactin levels to be checked as this can be a sign of a prolactinome, a benign tumour on the pituitary gland (not as bad as it sounds) I would see a go though
