Broken ankle

I had surgery , 10 days ago, on my ankle after a break 3 weeks ago. In a cast, no weight bearing.

Its the worst medical thing I have ever experienced 😭 Mental health - knackered, healthy eating - long gone , motivation to do anything - nada , insanity - oh yes , pain - bloody awful , sleep quality with ankle elevated - bob all 😳

Anyone else had this injury and come out the other side ??

This time last year. It’s so bloody hard. Make sure you do physio afterwards. (NHS won’t offer any so you’ll need to pay) but it is worth it.

Yes.

eleven years ago.

bloody annoying and a pain in the arse.
I didn’t clock I’d need to sort my own physio and rehab until very late in the day so recovery was slow and not great.

I had a bad trimalleolar fracture with a lot of nerve and tendon damage.
A friend was married to a National Hunt jockey who had broken just about every bone at one time or another. He said that ankles are the worst and the day the plaster comes off, find the best sports injury physio you can afford and start therapy immediately. Don't wait for the NHS to get round to you.
I did and the process was awful - twice a week to start with, then every week for three or four months. She was very hard on me and I would often be in tears. But it absolutely worked. That was eight years ago and I am very active - a hill walker (which is how I broke it in the first place) although I do have some arthritis in it. Also the feeling has never come back on most of the top of my foot. I am old.
It can affect your opposite knee and hip because of everything being fractionally misaligned. On the whole, though, it hasn't stopped me climbing, walking miles, running, wearing high heels, and pretty much doing what I've always done.
It's a horrible fracture though. Sometimes I set off airport security sensors.

I have NHS physio booked on Wednesday, cast off and boot fitted Monday. But have private physio as back up !

Yes! 4 years ago: trimalleolar fracture dislocation. Ankle now full of metal. Non weight bearing for 12 looooooooooong weeks. I am NOT a sit around person and I found it enormously challenging. BUT! Time did pass and my ankle is healed. I did a 10 km hilly walk yesterday and although like a previous poster, I also gave arthritis in it, apart from a bit of stiffness it’s great. I always wear supportive walking boots for long walks though. You’ll get through this.

Yes, pin and plate in mine. The pin was taken out though. I was pregnant at the time and it was pretty miserable! I am very active now - you will get there!

I broke mine 4 years ago and no one could understand why I felt so depressed about it! Luckily I managed to avoid surgery though it was touch and go! Luckily mine healed after 5 weeks after I took calcium and vitamin D supplements. They wouldn’t give me a boot and the physio was minimal!!! I went private on he physio who did an excellent job with it post recovery - massage and helping it not to seize up! In fact I think it’s better than before I broke it as used to get a lot of swelling after spraining both several times! Doesn’t seem to swell as much now!

I used to go down the stairs once a day on my arse and in the evening watch movies in the bedroom. I hated going to the loo As my husband had to work! Think I lost half a stone! Good luck! It will heal!

How are you doing, OP?

I broke my ankle a couple of weeks ago and came looking on here for sympathy - I found your thread. I’m lucky in that I don’t need surgery but the utter boredom and frustration is doing me in. Can’t even carry a cup of tea and I HATE being dependent on everyone else.

Hope you are on the mend.
