Hearing problems?

My DS, nearly 3, is saying 'what you say?' alot after we speak to him. He says it if we've spoken to him first or when he asks a question and we answer him. I often have to repeat things 3 or 4 times for him.

Is there any cause for concern do you think or is it a talking phase. He genuinlly doesn't seem to be able to hear what i'm saying.

Any similar experiences or opinions appreciated.

Thanks

Talk him to your GP and ask for a referral for a hearing test. Hearing problems are very common at this age. I know several children with gromits including dd1, who can now hear a lot better since having them inserted.

Glue ear is really common at this age. The fact that he is saying "What you say" is good, it means he has reasonable speech. Generally doctors are reluctant to put grommets at this age as glue ear generally clears up on its own.

Does your son have hayfever? It might improve his hearing to give him piraton.

Okay thank you.

His hearing screening was perfect.

What's glue ear? How do they get rid of it?

He has an aversion to the doctor, there is no chance of him letting him stick something in his ear.

I'm glad that your son's hearing is perfect.

Glue happens when the middle ear is full of pus, typically after a head cold or an ear infection. In some children the eustation tubes are very narrow and it takes a long time for the gunk from the middle ear to drain into the throat.

Generally glue ear clears up without medical help, but if it lasts longer than 6 months then sometimes doctors insert grommets into the ear drum. This makes it easier for the ear to drain and the child can hear again.
