Please can anyone help me to work out what’s going on with my back - have a referral for a new physio but not for another 4 weeks - according to GP only this physio can refer for an MRI (I can’t afford private). This has been going on for 3 years, started when I was 29 and breastfeeding my 6 month old -

  • started with tingling in the middle, left of my back, in one spot (went to GP who wasn’t concerned)
  • over time developed a kind of stabbing pain in same area, when in certain positions (washing up, sitting on certain seats etc)
  • tingling seems to have spread to the right side, but only sometimes
  • developed aching in the right top of my back months ago, feels like the strain when you do too much exercise, this lasted for months but seems to have got much better
  • sometimes have lower back kind of pain that feels as if my hip is out of line, osteopath said I have a tiled pelvis
  • back clicks a lot, sometimes I feel crunches
  • at the moment, main concern is stabbing pain and tingling over middle back

Ive been to 4 different doctors, a physio and an osteopath about this, no one is concerned as pain isn’t constant or debilitating. I’ve been referred to a more serious physio for end of sept. In the mean time I’m driving myself mad. Could it be my kidneys? My health anxiety is really bad. My understanding was that kidney pain wouldn’t come and go, and these symptoms definitely come and go, sometimes for a couple of weeks it feels much better. The last physio said my spine is a little bit curved and said ‘oh maybe scoliosis’ but didn’t say much else. I didn’t really know what she meant. Could scoliosis cause these problems? No one’s ever mentioned that I have a curved spine, I’m 32. I have gained weight over last few years but am now working on losing it/getting fitter. All started when I was a healthy weight, but looking after 6 month old. Sorry this was long, thanks for reading.

If you live in London you could ask for a referral to the Royal orthopaedic hospial in Stanmore. My DC has had a back xray and MRI there. The physio said there's nothing wrong with her range of movement and discharged her. I kept going back to the go because she's still complaining and gor referred there.

Thank you, I am in London so will look into this.

OP, have you checked the basics?

When did you last change your mattress? You need a firm, relatively new mattress that supports your and your partner's weight separately. If he lies on his side, is your side of the bed still perfectly flat?

Shoes? Do you wear sensible, supportive shoes with soles & heels that aren't worn unevenly.

Office chair. Do you spend a lot of time at a desk? If yes, have you tried a standing desk or orthopedic chair?

Exercise - what do you do? Look at changing or easing your regime. If you run, get your gait measured and buy properly fitted shoes.

They are really good. She had xray at her first appointment. They couldn't see an issue but because of the pain gave her MRI. She's only 5. This has all been done within 3 months.

Could it just be a bulging disc that comes and goes? Could it have popped out a bit when you were bending for 6 month old? And once discs do that they are always prone to do it again. And if there's a bulging disc then it can happen that other parts of the structure compensate and you get pains in other spine related areas. Have you tried rubbing in Ibuprofen gel when it happens? If that helps maybe work on your core strength and back muscles. And straight back always, no bending to pick things up so work on hip mobility for squatting.

I'd very much doubt it's kidneys. But I suffer from health anxiety too so I know what you're going through. Try the ibuprofen gel.
