Would you go to minor injuries?

Managed to pour a jug of boiling gravy over my hand on Sunday, got it under running water straight away and thought it wasn’t looking too bad. What’s now concerning me is it hasn’t been painful, and has now developed blisters and is feeling quite hot. I’m currently away from home but have found a minor injuries unit not far that opens at 8am. Would you get it looked at?

Yes definitely - I was in MIU last week and there was a chap there who came in with a soup burn that resulted in blisters and he was triaged and received treatment (we were talking about what flavour soup it was as he sat next to me - promise I wasn't being a nosy beak!) Definitely pop up there as they will triage first and send you home if they think it's not worth being there. Get well soon!

pambeesleyhalpert · 27/08/2025 21:23

Ow that looks really painful yeah I’d probably go!

GoldPoster · 27/08/2025 21:24

I was going to say I wouldn’t bother, but then I zoomed in and you have a nasty blister.

It could probably do with an expert dressing in my opinion.

Shylo · 27/08/2025 21:24

Yes I would go and get that checked out given the size of the burn and the size of that blister - and I say this as someone who is very much at the ‘jog it off, you’ll be fine’ end of the scale usually

hope you’re on the mend soon!

The lack of feeling and blisters is concerning. I'd definitely go and get it looked at.

FYI if you burn yourself again, the minimum time under running cold water is now 20 minutes at lest. It could be you didn't cool it for long enough.

blythet · 27/08/2025 21:28

I’d go

Pigsinblankets13 · 27/08/2025 21:29

Absolutely! Ouch!

GreenFrogYellow · 27/08/2025 21:29

Yes

I kept it under for 20 minutes and then sat with my hand in a bowl of water for another 20, unfortunately it was very hot gravy that had a lot of boiling fat in it, I could kick myself for not being more careful 🤦🏽‍♀️.

Thanks everyone, I will head there first thing just to make sure.

Better to be safe than sorry - I left it a week before going to MIU with my thumb and only then because a lovely lady who I work with in the community made me. Glad she did - it's broken in two places and now I have a splint! Hope they see you swiftly and that you get the treatment you need. Sending you minor injury solidarity and recovery vibes!

I'd probably pop into a pharmacy first. They were very helpful with DD when she had a similar injury (see picture).

It does look similar, mine maybe a little more scaly now, what did they suggest? Hope your Dd has fully recovered.

Burns to the hands, feet and face are an A&E job according to my basic first aid training for my job.

coxesorangepippin · 27/08/2025 21:52

Ouch

Yes I would

dizzydizzydizzy · 27/08/2025 21:53

Yes I'd get I looked at. I used to be a lifeguard and we were taught in our first aid training that burns on the hand were at higher risk of complications and also anything bigger than a 50p needs to be seen. Both apply to you so definitely get some medical help.

Yes it healed well - it was a couple of years ago. I think it was an otc burn remedy (maybe betnovate?) and we definitely had bandages on her hand for a few days. Told not to pop the blister as that would increase infection risk.

User8743 · 28/08/2025 10:29

Your burn involves multiple fingers, top of the hand and wrist. It is too big for DIY care. You need instructions, proper dressing and likely you might get a certificate to be off work depending on what you do.
My friend got one as his job at a café including emptying hot dishwater and carrying hot drinks around and he could feel the pain through the bandage. He was given two weeks off.

CoreyTaylorsbiggestfan · 28/08/2025 11:17

Hope you went and got seen to OP burns to hand normally get referred to plastics!

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 28/08/2025 12:04

I did the same Christmas Day a few years ago but spilt the gravy on my foot. Got a bollocking from the doctor a few days later when I did get it checked out but did recover with no scaring. Hope all ok.

dizzydizzydizzy · 28/08/2025 12:12

How are you @gravyscald ? Did you go to the minor injuries unit? What did they do?

notapizzaeater · 28/08/2025 16:32

Hope you’ve got on ok. I once had to attend an and e after making roast potatoes, managed to spill the boiling water on my hand from the pan before I transferred to the roasting tin. Was sat in there when another woman came in having done exactly the same thing!

It was looking less red this morning, so decided to try the pharmacy first, they just said they didn’t know and I should probably get someone to look at it. Thankfully minor injuries was only a 15 minute walk from there and amazingly no queue! Nurse said it seemed to be healing nicely and so long as I still had sensation in my hand all good, so thankfully all okay! Thanks everyone.

That’s good news! Glad you got it checked. Hope it heals quickly.
