Impacted wisdom teeth removal

Please share your experiences! I need all four of mine out that are impacted and only partially erupted.

I AM TERRIFIED

I don’t know whether it’ll be done in one go or one side first.

I hate the dentist at the best of times but terrified of all of it: the needle, the numbness, the post op bleeding, dry socket.

Please chill me out!!

Local or general?

I’ve had mine out under local. It wasn’t fun but it was fine in the dentist’s. Had significant pain afterwards though - I recommend co-codamol.

Really? Oh god I’m awful with pain. How long did it last? My own dentist can do it with local or I can opt for general at private hospital. Unsure at the moment, mainly cost implications.

I had to have my upper 2 removed. I used my work private healthcare to have them done under general as I was terrified. Obviously I didn’t feel a thing, but the recovery was much better than I expected.

I’ve heard that you should get them all done at the same time if they all need doing as you likely wouldn’t want to go back for the rest if not.

I had one out, a partially erupted lower wisdom tooth that kept getting inflamed/infected.

I just had local anaesthetic, and once the anaesthetic was all in and working, the tooth was out in under 90 seconds. And that was with it being partially erupted and him having to cut my gum to get it out.

The pain was manageable with alternating paracetamol and ibuprofen every 2 hours. I don’t know how I’d have managed if both sides of my mouth had been done at once - I needed the other side of my mouth to eat!

I had all four of mine out at once under GA. At the time I had a 10 week old EBF baby. I fed DS, left him with DH, had the op, 1.5 hours later ate a tuna sandwich, fed DS again and went home. For a week, I did all the saline rinses and avoided eg apples and roast beef but otherwise ate normally, carried on with normal routine and just needed a couple of paracetamol for the first two days. I know I was lucky compared to some but honestly it was absolutely fine (though possibly being 10 weeks postpartum skewed my thinking on pain?!)

All 4 of mine came through at the same time, all impacted. I had to have them removed under GA in hospital but this was in about 1991 so a long time ago! I could have got up and walked out as soon as I came round from the GA but they kept me in for the day. All was totally fine and uneventful.

I have subsequently in my 40's had 1 other tooth extracted in the dental chair (my choice to have it pulled as I cba to have a root canal done, I do regret that!). Anyway, that 1 tooth was painful for a week afterwards but pain killers kept on top of it.

I've had impacted wisdom teeth removed, the worst had to be cut into sections and removed piece by piece.

The injections on lower you don't feel, upper a little bit painful but nothing that you can't handle. The initial pinch can feel like stabbing yourself in the roof of the mouth with a crisp, it's over in a second.

Once you're numb the actual process is painless, bang some music on and just let them crack on.

Bit sore afterwards, I took OTC pain relief for two days, after that I didn't really need anything, was just sore and swollen for a week or so. Biggest bummer was the diet of scrambled eggs and soup for 3-4 days.

Keep your extraction sites clean and follow the aftercare instructions and you'll wonder what all the fuss was about 2-3 weeks down the line.

It really is nothing.

They wont do all four in one go unless you have a GA generally due to the risk of you biting your tongue. Left and right hand side are normally done a few weeks apart.

My eldest DD had all 4 out a couple of years ago when she was 24. Two of them were growing literally sideways, so delicate procedure to remove them. She had local anaesthetic. Hilarious drive home as she was still under the influence and numb (looking in a mirror and slurring, in a dramatic voice "they've fucked up my face!) For reference it was very slightly swollen. She regrets the videos she was posting to her socials from the car, that I was advising her was a bad idea 🤣 Sore for a few days but she healed really well and quickly with no complications.

Other DD had hers done last year. Just two out. She has a really, really low pain threshold and cried when the local wore off. She dosed up with co-codamol and was ok in a day or two though.

I had all 4 of mine removed under general anaesthetic. It was fine! I had 2 weeks off work and enjoyed the break. I had bruising up my face but honestly it really wasn’t bad at all.
