I had my first one last year. I personally found it fine. Getting into the right position and basically hugging the machine is all a bit odd, but not painful for me.

dogcatkitten · 25/08/2025 20:58

Just a trifle embarrassing and slightly painful, nothing awful. Just do what they say getting into the right position.

tartyflette · 25/08/2025 20:59

Have to say I found them quite painful, but the process is over quite quickly.
(Not everyone experiences pain at all. Just my experience. )

Myfridgeiscool · 25/08/2025 21:01

It’s a few seconds of your boob being squished. I took some paracetamol before my first one because I was a bit worried but it was absolutely fine and I’ve not done that since.
Mammograms are life saving stuff!

SabbatWheel · 25/08/2025 21:04

A bit squeezy but I don’t find them painful. The squeeze is literally three seconds, twice per boob.

Owly11 · 25/08/2025 21:12

The first squish on each breast is absolutely fine, the second a bit more uncomfortable. All done in a few minutes, no pain.

LIZS · 25/08/2025 21:19

Take a painkiller beforehand. They squeeze your boob between two metal plates , then squeeze some more. It stings and the pose is awkward.

speckledjimmy · 25/08/2025 21:21

It hurt me but only briefly. Over before I knew it. And they save lives.

suki1964 · 25/08/2025 21:21

Not painful on the boob, but painful for my neck and shoulders - Ive arthritis , but its all done and dusted in 2 mins

ScaredSceptic · 26/08/2025 00:24

Had my first a couple of months ago. I was dreading it as I have quite large breasts and my period was due so they were tender already, but it was absolutely fine.

The weirdest bit for me was when the plate was moving down to compress the breast, it's so tight against your chest that it's hard to stop yourself from instinctively moving back. Wasn't painful though, just odd.

DramaAlpaca · 26/08/2025 00:30

I don't find them embarrassing, but I do find them quite painful. Painful but necessary. I'm very pro-screening so I'll put up with a bit of discomfort for the sake of my health.

sittingonabeach · 26/08/2025 00:32

Remember you can only use roll on deodorant on the day, no sprays.

It is a bit weird and can be painful. It is strange having a stranger manhandle your boobs whilst you are standing in an awkward position. But they don’t take long.

Our clinic don’t provide gowns anymore so have a top you can throw on quickly if you need to move around rooms. I take a cardigan that covers everything

RomainingCalm · 26/08/2025 00:39

I found it a bit awkward but didn’t particularly feel exposed at any point. The staff that were doing it were brilliant - put me at ease and managed to keep chatting whilst getting me into position and explaining the process.

Potentially life saving and worth 10 minutes of mild embarrassment.

TheFormidableMrsC · 26/08/2025 00:53

I find the side squishing uncomfortable but not painful. I think you just have to get on with it. It’s a very short time of discomfort for something that could save your life. I’ve had breast cancer.

Poodlelove · 26/08/2025 15:23

Thank you all , anything is better than my smear and Hysteroscopy

I’ve never been told this, and I’ve been having them for many years now.

@BIWI per NHS website

My initial letter for last mammogram didn’t state it, but follow up letter does
