DH & possible enlarged prostate - how to broach with him!

I don’t normally wake up in the middle of the night if my DH (49) goes for a wee. But I did last night and couldn’t help but hear that his stream sounded very stop / start. I also noticed it a few weeks ago as well but thought nothing of it at the time.

Stupid question but is this normal for men? I have googled and read it is potentially a sign of an enlarged prostate?

Not sure if I should raise it with him. Should I?

Any advice? I’d be mortified if I knew anyone had listened to me weeing!

It's normal for men but 49 is young and he needs to see a doctor.

Maybe start by pointing out you've noticed he's started having to get up in the night for a wee and take it from there?

As someone who looks after their elderly parent who ignored his prostate and now has an indwelling catheter because of this, I would suggest you just tell him he needs to get it checked.

My ex was about the same age as your DH when he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. It's best to catch it whilst it's still contained within the capsule. They can do a radical robotic prostatectomy via keyhole now. Apparently it has a high success rate.

Of course he may just have BPH, but he'll not know until he gets checked.

Just tell him. He's your husband, you should be able to tell him anything!

Ok, thanks for the advice. Appreciate it.

Have just raised it with him. He didn’t even remember going to the bathroom last night!

Appointment being booked now with GP. Thanks all x

I'm 53, and, mercifully, don't have to get up in the night (yet), but afaik once per night is "normal", and it is when it gets to more frequent you should consider GP etc.

DH is a few years older now but had the same from about 49. Had it checked out and all fine, but I don't think it hurts to have the blood test results on file so they can compare in future years. GP was most uninterested really!
I think the blood test PSA(?) gives both false positives and negatives at a fairly high rate, I remember having to read an article that came with the appointment.

As per pp, my grandad ignored his symptoms and ended up with an emergency due to a blockage and then a catheter.

I mean definitely broach it with him, but given it was the middle of the night, did he have an errection? My DH tells me apparently he pees like that when errect because it’s quite difficult to get the stream going! Who knew 😂🙈. Getting checked is definitely a good idea but if it’s not a regular problem I wouldn’t worry yet.

This is generally more of a morning problem. The pipes have to switch over..

How did he get on OP? DH is having similar issues.
