Amitriptyline anyone tried it?

I’ve been prescribed 10mg for nerve pain. I’ve taken it two nights and apart from waking with a head ache it’s not helping. I know it can take a while to kick in just wondering if anyone has had any success? Can you not drink alcohol at all with it?

It can take a few weeks to work it doesn't reacy like nornal painkillers it works well.

Coffeeishot · 24/08/2025 09:29

I drank a few glasses of wine when I was on it with no issues.

notanothernamechangemother · 24/08/2025 09:31

I took 10 mg once and had the most horrendous side effects. Felt like a zombie the day after, so I won't touch amitriptyline again!

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 24/08/2025 09:32

It was prescribed to me for neck pain, after a year of NHS physio failed to sort the issue. All it did was put me into a zombie state. I paid for an Osteopath, two appointments later issue sorted and tablets dropped!

DelilahBucket · 24/08/2025 09:37

I was taking 4mg a night at one point. They didn't help with pain, just knocked me out. Never again. Between those, tramadol and codeine, I have huge memory gaps in my life.

When it comes to pain I find the NHS just throw you all the pills but don't find out the cause of the pain. I sought private help in the end. I didn't need the meds, I needed a cure.

Zingzoomyzingy · 24/08/2025 09:38

It was completely useless for my pain.

Fitzcarraldo353 · 24/08/2025 09:42

If you find amitriptyline makes you too drowsy ask about Nortriptyline as it's very similar but tends to have fewer side effects apparently. It's more expensive so NHS reluctant to prescribe it in the first instance. I take 30mg of Nortriptyline for migraine prevention.

MayaPinion · 24/08/2025 09:44

For nerve pain I had Zapain, Naproxen, and amitriptaline. The amitriptaline didn’t do much on its own for pain. I took it at night to help me sleep. Although it didn’t work well as a painkiller on its own it did help with my distress and anxiety. You have my sympathies, OP. I’ve never experienced pain like that before and I hope I never will again. I did drink alcohol while on it and had no problems.

MayaPinion · 24/08/2025 09:46

Make sure you get physio and practice it religiously. That’s the thing that makes the biggest difference. And get a heat pad. I had one of these and it was a lifesaver.

It helped me sleep and with my pain.

it works for some people and not others.

you are on a low dose. Either try upping it or try a different drug.

HelpMeGetThrough · 24/08/2025 09:48

I’m on 10mg daily for nerve damage after emergency surgery. It takes a while to work, but it’s been great for me.

I take it in the evening and I do end up falling asleep. Had side effects in the morning for about a week of feeling tired and that was it. I’ll happily drink with it, doesn’t cause a problem.

Hoardasurass · 24/08/2025 09:48

I've taken anatriptoleen as a migraine preventative for years and it's had no side effects but it hasn't helped my nerve pain I'm on gabapentin for that. Hope it helps you though

itsgettingweird · 24/08/2025 09:50

I went up to 30mg a day (for cluster headaches) as 10mg wasn’t enough.

Well neither was 30mg to stop them and I’m now on verapamil bit 10mg is a low dose so it’s worth speaking to GP about either switching or upping.

The headache for me dwindled after 2 weeks of being on it but it’s a known side effect.

DinoLil · 24/08/2025 09:52

I'm prescribed 60mg a night. I take that, tramadol, naproxen, dexamfetamine, lurasidone, another one I can't remember. All useless.

I had a sickness bug recently so couldn't keep anything in. I've not gone back on any of them but take a paracetamol instead, as and when.

persianfairyfloss · 24/08/2025 10:19

I am on 100 mg split dose and it works like a charm for neuropathic pain and anxiety for me. 10mg is a very low dose.

However I've never felt like a zombie on it.

autienotnaughty · 25/08/2025 09:27

Yesterday I had awful nerve pain in my legs worse than normal. I’m wondering if it’s the meds causing it and will it settle?

I'm on amitryptaline long term for tinnitus and insomnia. Works really really well and can have a couple glasses wine with it without an issue.

DeirdreChambersWhatACoincidence · 25/08/2025 09:43

I've been taking 10mg at bedtime for just over a year for nerve pain in my hips and legs and other than being a bit sweaty the first few mornings, I've had zero side effects and zero pain. It's been life changing for me- I couldn't even put my own socks on before because it hurt me too much.

This. I took amitriptyline 10mg for constant headaches, it takes at least a few weeks to give you the true effects on your pain. The zombie state did wear off but I was falling asleep at 9pm every night and needed a good amount of sleep.

No it's very unlikely to be the endep.

BunnyLover7 · 25/08/2025 09:54

I can’t remember my dose but it was low. I got really vivid dreams with it.

I’ve also been over heating I thought maybe hrt was being less effective.

It takes a little while to kick in and to find the right dose. 10mg is the lowest start dose I believe.

I take it for migraine prevention and it took a while to get the right dose for me. I felt seriously sleepy in the morning for a week or two, but that wore off (I just took it earlier in the evening to begin with). We increased the dose every few weeks and I’m now on 30mg and it’s working really well.

There are other treatments for neuropathic pain if it doesn’t suit you. There’s an SSRI called duloxetine, or there’s drugs like pregabalin and gabapentin that can work really well for some. There’s no straightforward answer as to which will work best for each person, so it can be a bit of trial and error. It’s worth reading about the pros and cons of pregabalin and gabapentin before starting it if you decide to try something different, as some people have issues on it (or coming off it).

duckduckgooseduckagain · 25/08/2025 21:34

I took 50mg for vulval nerve pain. It helped me to sleep and gave me a dry mouth but that was the only side effect. I used to drink now and again when taking it with no adverse effect. I've stopped taking it now as it didn't do anything for the pain.

Gerwurtztraminer · 25/08/2025 22:14

I'm on 20mg a day (started on 10mg) for back pain and it works. For the first few weeks it made me unable to wake up properly in the mornings and groggy feeling for a few hours. But that wore off. It still makes me very sleepy and zonks me out after 3-4 hours of taking it at night (as if I have an off switch suddenly flicked!) so I now take it earlier, around 7pm and no morning grogginess. No other noticeable side effects.

I do drink on it, rarely more than 2 glasses of wine though, and it can make me zonk out quicker than normal. So I have to take it later to ensure I'll make it home safely before it kicks in.
