Hi, so I have a prolapse which is getting worse. Can only toilet while splinting. Constantly feel pain that I need a wee due to colon issues. Never feel void etc. Has anyone had prolapse surgery that was actually successful? Or is it just a road to doom? Thanks.

@Willweeverfindout I think it depends on the surgeon.

I chose a gynae who was just a gynae. My recto-enterocele surgery failed in 3 months. I should have gone to a uro-gynae with a track record of successful repairs. I did end up having to refer myself somewhere else as I had issues after the surgery.

My uro-gynae who I see now, has a 97% first repair success rate.

I also subsequently found out that I have a connective tissue disorder, so this could be one of the reasons mine failed.

Whatever you do DONT join a prolapse group on Facebook. This is a road to anxiety and worry.

However I assume you have a pessary and are seeing a pelvic physio? If not you should do those things first. The silicon pessaries are better.

Good luck!

Oh and lots of fibre - soluble and insoluble. And a squatty potty. These will help you poo WAY more easily.

Thank you for replying! Yes. Squatty potty. Still splinting. My mum had the surgery (though in her 60s so a lot older than I am now). Just need to weigh up the surgery side. Thank you for the tip on researching the surgeons. I’ll do that.

@Willweeverfindout yes sadly the splinting is still required but things slide out a bit easier I find.

I'm over worrying about it now. My surgeon has offered to redo the surgery but I'm going to avoid it until I literally have to.

I had surgery for a rectocele 2 yrs ago & am so pleased to have had it. Life is normal again now. Just wish I hadn’t waited so long to have had the surgery.

ShouldHaveCouldHaveWouldHaveDone · 29/08/2025 07:55

@Badgerstmary was this privately or nhs? If private, do you mind me asking how much, and how did you organise it? Thank you.

Notsurewheretostarthere · 29/08/2025 08:11

@ShouldHaveCouldHaveWouldHaveDone mine was private.

I found a gynae by looking online then checked with Bupa that the gynae was authorised.

I was already on the system for very bad vaginal atrophy so didn't need a new referral.

But I am very happy to recommend my second uro gynae in the south if thats any use.

I had prolapse repair about 7 years ago I think it was. I made sure I went to a female consultant and followed the recovery advice to the letter. She strongly insisted on a VERY gentle recovery period with strict instructions on what I was able to do when. If you overdo things when the tissue is still healing, you are much more likely to have a recurrence. Mine has been very successful, no issues since.
Personally I would only ever go to a female uro-gynaecologist.

Not in the South, but thank you Notsure

Good to hear it’s lasted well Akite

It was done on the NHS. I went to my gp who referred me to a consultant who offered the operation. I wasn’t ready at the time but was told I could wait & any time I was ready I could change my mind. A year later I was ready & given a cancellation operation extremely quickly.

Please could you share some info about how your prepared for the surgery, what you took to hospital with you, and how you recovered?

I'm having surgery in 3 weeks and feel very in the dark about it all!

Hi, I can’t particularly remember if I had specific instructions as to how to prepare, but I had been eating healthily & exercising. I took clothes that were easy to put on afterwards, no trousers!!
I stayed just one night & unfortunately the gynae ward was full so I was put in a random ward where they didn’t know anything about my actual surgery. They were extremely nice though & looked after me well.
The next day I went home. I had downloaded an information sheet which stated when you were able to do different activities after surgery that. That was probably the most useful thing I had. When you start going for a walk , don’t overdo it. You won’t be able to go very far at 1st. Make sure you have everything you need next to you as you won’t wish to move much to start with. If you have somebody to look after you, brilliant. Otherwise, prepare some meals beforehand or buy some ready meals.
Good luck! X

It's so hard being so in the dark about something that feels so huge!
