Low heart rate - should I worry?

My heart rate is always low - whenever I’ve been in hospital for anything I always set the monitor alarms off as they’re usually calibrated to go off with heart rates of less than 50bpm. My resting heart rate is usually mid 40s but often drops down into the high 30s. I’m pretty active but definitely not elite athlete levels of fitness. I’m early 60s, normal blood pressure, not overweight. I’m torn between thinking that someone’s got to be an outlier and that this is normal for me and wondering if I should get it checked out properly?

Go see your GP.

How are you monitoring this? When it’s mid 30s are you sleeping?

Pleasedontdothat · 23/08/2025 07:25

I got given an Apple Watch so it’s constantly pinging me low heart rate notifications.. before that I only knew about it when my pulse has been taken in medical settings (everyone always comments on how low it is) or when I’ve been hooked up to a monitor in hospital - I’ve been quite accident prone recently so have been in hospital a few times in the last couple of years

Not always - I can be sitting on the sofa reading/relaxing

Did u ever take it as a child? If always super low it's probably your normal

I remember taking mine in a biology lesson and it was 100. My resting rate has always been about 80-100.

Don't really fit people have low heart rates ?

Pleasedontdothat · 23/08/2025 08:01

As far as I remember it was unremarkably normal as a child and no one said anything about my heart rate/blood pressure during any of my pregnancies other than it was good/healthy. It’s got slower as I’ve got older. And yes, very fit people do have very low heart rates but while I’m fit and active, I don’t have elite athlete levels of fitness

Mine is also elite athlete paced and I'm not an elite athlete.

I did get mine checked out because I was having rather scary night time palpitations, so was hooked to a monitor for a few days. They didn't find anything wrong, I just have bracicardia but they did want to check it out and it was reassurance. I think the palpitation were work stress/perimenopause.

Bradycardia can be cause by a hypothyroid.

Get yours checked and ask for a cup of your results because doctors are notoriously bad at dealing with thyroid.
