Hi, dd was at gp this morning with cough/breathing problems. We have been through this lots of times before but this time I cannot get her medicine into her. I am on my own with her till around 6.30 and she is quite ill and needs to take a dissolvable steroid tablet and a spoon of cough medicine. I tried the steroid once already in a syringe but she spat it all over the place. I tried another one in juice (she didn't see me put it in) but she won't drink a drop. She is asleep now but not breathing well. Help.

oh dear - bribery?

or hide it in a yoghurt/drink

can you offer it to a teddy/dolly first or you pretend to have it?

hope she is on the mend soon

She won't eat anything. I even offered her a bottle which she hasn't had during the day for months but to no avail. I am getting worried as she has been in hospital in the past when her breathing got bad so need to do something fast.

The steroid will disolve in the tinyist amount of water, place it on a teaspoon drop a few drops of water onto it with a syringe - you can crush it first with a second teaspoon if you wish.

Is the cough med from GP? If not forget about it, don't really help for young DC.

OR call your GP and ask about nebulisation, your DD will hate this more than she hates the medicine I promise you!

Does she have inhalers? This may be time to start if not.

bribery? Have you tried offering chocolate/sweets if she takes it?

She has becotide and ventolin inhalers but when she gets like this she needs the booost of the Prednilsone.
The cough medicine was prescribed by the gp so I think we should try it.
She has been on the nebulizer several times in the past and hated it. We never had this problem getting the stuff into her before, probably because usually have dh or mil to help.

thanks

Wait until she's in a deep sleep, then edge it in with a syringe. Even if she wakes, she'll still have swallowed most of it. Used to work 90% of the time with our DS.
Or if she's old enough, try a sticker chart. We promised DS a trip to Woolworths when he was better, but only if he took his medicine every day. It was easy for us as it was a course of antibiotics, so had an end point. We made a chart with days of the week, and gaps for stickers and a picture of the toy he wanted at the end.

Many pharmacies sell medicine dummies - they look like a dummy but have a compartment at the back which works like a syringe, so you can slip it into their mouths - it's not as scary looking as a syringe - then squirt it in quickly.

We loved ours. Best of luck.
