Root canal but no crown

i have had to get 3 root canals to teeth damaged by surgery.
I went to a specialist Endodontist for all of these and they have been successful.

at the time I asked if i needed a crown on any of them and the endodontist didn’t think I would as there was a lot of tooth remaining but they are back teeth and when I google this it seems the recommendation for long term survival of the tooth is to get a crown. I’ve already spent over 2.5k on this so not keen for the further expense.

Does anyone have experience of not getting a crown fitted post root canal and the tooth lasting?

I have one tooth like that. Root canal was done in 2019 with a bog standard filling to be crowned later. Well covid arrived, then a few other things happened and here I am. So far no issues, tooth is fine.

I did years ago, it lasted I'd guess a good 15 years, then my tooth cracked and it all fell apart. Dentist said it should have been crowned. I had a choice of a new filling and crown or pull the tooth.

If the specialist dentist said you don't need it then trust them. As long as it feels comfortable chewing etc.

Go to your regular dentist for a checkup and just ask them to look at those teeth specifically to see they are going fine without it.

I've got one with a crown. There wasn't enough tooth there to go without in my case.

I got more than a decade on root filled teeth before needing a crown, one is possibly 20+ or even 30+ years.

Crowns are a pain they only last 20 years and that flies by

My root canal on a back tooth continually failed until it needed a crown. Expensive and time consuming. Should’ve just crowned it from the start.

When teeth are saved by root canal the blood supply is gone. Long term this causes the tooth to become brittle and much more prone to cracking. If said tooth does crack/ break, it may/maynot be saved, that depends on the severity/ position of the crack. All root filled teeth are more likely to break than not root filled teeth

I asked my dentist about this on Wednesday; I had root canal work a couple of weeks ago and then a filling on Wednesday with the possibility of taking that out and having a crown fitted later in the year. She said that if there is plenty of tooth left, a filling is fine and can last years. In my case there isn't much tooth left, so she will monitor the situation, as the tooth may become brittle and break.

@Ilikewinter di you have pain in cracked tooth

Iamfree · 18/10/2025 09:25

I had a root canal in 2000 from a dentist near Victoria station (I walked past with tooth pain and he said I needed a root canal). No crown, I’ve moved dentist many times in the past 25 years all say I need a crown but still nothing. 25 years is good going !! So to me, a crown is not necessary (also back tooth). Good luck

@Knittedfairies2 a crown might be good mine is brittle and broken

Ilikewinter · 18/10/2025 12:31

@Deedoo no, there was no pain, but I got it looked at quite quickly.

My husbands got 2 without crowns and they’re well over 20 years old now with no problems, just asked him!
