DH ill - do I let him sleep or go to the hospital ?

DH at home with DD's, rang me at work complaining of banging headache, impaired vision and dizziness. He called me back a while later to say he'd started vomiting as well. I'm now home from work.

He says the headache is like a migraine (he used to suffer when he was younger but not had for years), coming down over right eye in particular, he's got his head stuck in pillows at the minute because he says looking up into the daylight hurts.

He just wants to go to sleep but I'm concerned (meningitis?)- have done self help test on NHS Direct website which in answering the first question says to go to the hospital but he wants to sleep for a while a see if he feels better

I would ask a Dr to come out to be honest. He is not going to be able to come out of the house if his head is that bad. I would phone them right now and get a gp out. Has he had a lot to drink (water etc). I am asking because my dh did this once and I panicked and it was dehydration caused by tonsilitis, he was in hosp for 4 days.

maidamess · 30/05/2008 11:36

Sounds like a severe migraine. Has he had any tablets for it?

BoysAreLikeDogs · 30/05/2008 11:36

How frightening for you both

The aversion to light is worrying.

Has he a stiff neck too ? Where he cant put his chin on his chest I mean.

shhhh · 30/05/2008 11:36

I would speak to nhs direct or your gp now...it may be a migrane BUT imo its not worth risking.

Men can be a bit OTT yet they can also ignore health issues iykiwm so I would get for advice.

Hope all is ok x

nickytwotimes · 30/05/2008 11:36

Get him to the hospital. Did it come on very suddenly? If it did, ask for neuro checks to be done - rule out anything serious.

FoghornLeghorn · 30/05/2008 11:37

I've called my Doctors who said I have to call back at 2.30 for an emergency appointment this afternoon, he can't see anyone this morning. TBH our GP's are awful and I'm not sure I would trust their diagnosis.
He did say he doesn't want to move because it hurts that much

I'm not sure about the fluids ......

phone NHS direct/NHS 24 or go to A&E?

DumbledoresGirl · 30/05/2008 11:42

I would call 999 and have done with it. Do you really want to wait?

singyswife · 30/05/2008 11:43

Yep am tending to agree with the 999 thing. I dont think this would be a waste of time, I think it needs to be checked and fast. If it is Meningitis the sooner it is dealt with the better. Hope he is better soon.

FoghornLeghorn · 30/05/2008 11:45

It came out of nowhere this morning ....
Not sure about the neck - didn't think to ask that.

I'm going to call SIL and see if she can watch DD's and then get him to the hospital I think. I'd rather be being overdramatic than not cautious enough

999

arransmummy · 30/05/2008 11:47

I would go to a&e asap, god forbid it is, but if it is meningitis it needs to be checked and meds given asap.

Marina · 30/05/2008 11:48

Hospital, now, to be on the safe side
Very best of luck foghornleghorn

Uriel · 30/05/2008 11:49

Sounds like a bad migraine - I have had just those symptoms.

Better to be safe though and call out a GP.

shhhh · 30/05/2008 11:49

I would do 999 as well or take your lo's to hospital with you and get her to meet you there to take the lo's..I wouldn't waste time...

Psychomum5 · 30/05/2008 11:50

if he cannot move, 999!!!

Baffy · 30/05/2008 11:52

A&E

Don't take the chance. Believe me it's not worth the risk.

(My uncle died from meningitis very suddenly. If it is that, then time is the key. Most likely it's an awful migraine. But better to be safe than sorry.)

Sorry for the awful story - but if you're in two minds about what to do and it pushes you to go then that's all I care about.

FoghornLeghorn · 30/05/2008 11:54

AAARRRGGGG !
SIL is having DD's, her house in on the way to A&E. I've just been upstairs and he just wnats to sleep for half an hour to see if it eases ..... I can't physically drag him out of bed !

EffiePerine · 30/05/2008 11:54

def A&E. If it is a migraine no harm done. Can you drive him there?

EffiePerine · 30/05/2008 11:55

in that case ring NHS Direct then (if they say go to A&E which they prob will) wake him up and tell him!

Psychomum5 · 30/05/2008 11:56

tell him he either goes with you, or you are ringing for an ambulance!

Baffy · 30/05/2008 11:56

Just tell him NHS direct have told you to take him there immediately. Save the time calling them as I think they will anyway.

EffiePerine · 30/05/2008 11:57

good point Baffy. Just lie

Baffy · 30/05/2008 12:00

It's what I'd do

FL any news?

luvaduck · 30/05/2008 12:00

did it come on suddenly out of the blue - like a thunderclap?
or did he first get a bit of visual disturbance/flashibng lights etc and then headache

if its the most sever headache he's ever had, it came on suddenly without warning tehn he def needs to go to A+E to rule out a subarachniod haemorrhage.

if you do go you need to make clear that this is unusual, came on suddenly, worst ever etc can't stand light so they take it seriously.

good luck
