Bleeding in stools

Hello

I woke up in the middle of the night to a bad episode of vomiting and diahorrea (sp?), accompanied by very bad cramping.

The symptoms gradually stopped a few hours later, but I noticed that my last bout of diahorrea was completely bloody, and this morning there has been bloody mucus when I wiped.

i can’t think of anything I could have eaten that could have caused food poisoning, and I believe it’s rare for a normal stomach bug (without food poisoning) to cause bleeding. I’m very scared as my dad died from bowel cancer and I’m finding it hard to function/

Thanks for reading x

That sounds very unpleasant but if it’s a one off I wouldn’t leap to a cancer conclusion. That said, I would go straight to GP and get checked. Xx

@scared80there are so many conditions that could cause blood in the stools or bleeding from there, most of which are less serious than cancer, particularly as accompanied by vomiting. But it is important that you speak to your GP as soon as possible for testing. Also remember that bowel cancer caught early is very treatable. Deep breath, you will almost certainly be completely fine. Call the GP first thing tomorrow morning.

I'd suspect a wee international hemorrhoid that's been upset by the bug. Get it checked when you've recovered . I had a colonoscopy a few years ago consultant said that I had a couple tucked away.

If it's bright red blood it's usually a little tear or pile close to the exit and nothing to worry about as one off. Darker blood needs more investigation.

Very sudden onset of bloody diarrhoea like this accompanied by vomiting is (in my lay person’s opinion) unlikely to have a sinister cause.

I had similar when I had campylobacter which was diagnosed with a stool sample and easily treated with antibiotics. So you really should seek medical advice but I think it’s unlikely to be what you’re worrying about.

Years ago I had a tummy bug that lasted nearly 2 weeks and I had blood in my stool and mucus. Call Dr if worried, they may be able to send a stool sample off.

It could be a number of reasons. I myself at present having 4 ops , have pre cancer cells its not cancer but maybe turn in or within ten years.so lesions removed , but I had blood when I wiped so see a Dr don't assume,I as thought my blood was from a pile , There was no pile .

Are people still trotting this out on here because it’s absolute nonsense. The colour of the blood is dependent on the source of the bleeding. If it’s high up in the digestive tract it will be darker as will be partly digested. Bleeding from lower down tends to be a brighter red. Colon cancer and rectal cancer will result in bright red bleeding so it’s nothing to be complacent about, Any bleeding from the bowel needs to be investigated.

Totally agree, I went straight to A E as it was a bank Holiday last year , constipation pain , then when tried to pass, blood in mucus, I am glad I never ignored it, as they found 6 polyps and 2 anal lesions all removed and then followed by 4 polyps removed from. Colon, oncologist said 6 weeks later after histology lab report that they were HSIL , high grade pre cancer cells, hopefully all clear now .so never ignore regardless.
