Knee issue when walking down hills/slopes

For the last few weeks I have been getting really bad pain in my right knee but only after walking down a slope or a hill. Almost like the knee has come out of the socket or it’s rubbing against something. I have to sit a while for it to go off and then I’m fine if walking on a flat surface or up a hill/slope. I have stuck to flat surfaces for a couple of weeks and went somewhere today that is quite hilly. It started again. Feels like the right hand side of my knee but deep inside. I can hardly walk when it happens! I sat down a bit and was fine after a while, as long as I stuck to a flat surface. I don’t have any issues climbing stairs - it just seems to be when I am coming down a bank. I haven’t had any injuries (that I can recall).

Is this treatable as it’s stopping me going out walking in the lakes!!??

I’m 53 and post menopausal (if that means anything) - not on HRT so hope my bones aren’t going to mush!! 💀 🦴

Thanks 🙏

It may sound odd, but have you tried leaning forwards as you walk downhill? I found it solved the problem.

Try stretching your muscles and hip flexors on that leg using a roller if you can, or doing some yoga. It can take a while to improve but often pain on the outside of your knee can come from having overly tight thighs/hips etc..and I had the same on both of mine walking down hill, and a physio suggested stretching and it fixed it.
