I get migraines. They don't last long and I don't get headaches just visual disturbances. I get them every few m9nths. I want to know what causes them but a GP at my surgery won't send me for investigation to a migraine clinic because my migraines only last about 15 mi uses. I had one of these migraines earlier today. I am fed up with it. I want to find out what's causing them but no doctor will take me seriously. About a year ago I had a migraine that lasted an hour so I went to A and E and by the time I saw a doctor she told me she could do nothing to help me and sent me away. I was fuming

Yeah - I think you’re over thinking it

loads of people get migraines. There’s not really any known cause, there’s a few theories - your hypothalamus, blood flow to the brain, unusual brain activity. Some people have triggers like food or alcohol or periods and some are random.

to be honest, if you’re that lucky that they last 10 minutes. I’d let it go and find something else to think about.

In short, yes you are making a fuss for nothing.

I agree.

OP, what you describe is a mild, short lived inconvenience. I'm shocked that you attended A&E for something so minor, that was neither an accident or an emergency.

Count your blessing that your 'migraines' are a non-event, as it's certainly not the case for countless other migraine sufferers (me included) who are totally incapacitated for hours and/or days at a time.

Yes you are right. Years ago when I was a teenager I gor blackouts and fits and total amnesia. These went on into my early 20s. I had several brain scans to rule out epilepsy. Nothing was found and they eventually stopped and haven't had one for 32 years

Bit confused @PerkyOchrePeer as in your very first post you reference visual disturbance but other posts say aural?
If visual, have you seen an optician? Who told you they were migraine?

My last one was a doozy of severe head pain and hemiplegia that lasted almost a fortnight. I do think you're making a fuss over nothing I'm afraid.

I know what silent migraines are. Your reply doesn't tell me if your aura is visual or aural, or maybe both?
But 10-15 mins? I wouldn't be pushing for anything further.

Yes but when I was a teenager or a young adult, I didn't even get silent migraines and when I hit my 40s they suddenly started. One of my cousins got them weekly as a teenager and he was sent home from school to kay in bed in his darkened room. I know mine don't last long but that's beside the point The point is they shouldn't last at all and I was just interested to know why because they never happened when I was younger.

Silent migraines are extremely common in older women. I get them regularly and am very grateful that the disturbed vision interferes with my activities for only about half an hour. I would usually have a “heavy” head afterwards but no further pain. I had a different year long constant headache up to Feb of this year and had all investigations, and was eventually diagnosed with occipital neuralgia, on a background of silent migraine. Consultant was completely unconcerned about silent migraine, much more concerned about the Occ Neur which eventually abated after different treatments.

I think aural was a typo

Hi OP.
I feel a bit sorry for you on this thread other posters seems to be minimising your issues with 'well at least....'
I've had silent migraines/aura/visual migraines since I was 20. The first one was the worst because I pushed through it and actually lost my vissuion but I know now to stop and rest in quiet place when they happen.
I've never been to the Dr because they don't affected me that much. I can have none for 9 months and then 6 in a month.
But I can completely understand that if they started suddenly how odd it is and how weird that now on seems to think any thing of it.
I do find it really hard to explain to others that I can't 'see straight ' as well I say at work I have a migraine every one gives me pain killers. ( personally I think that lots of ppl day that the migraines headaches but they are a different type of headache and not a migraine). The.aura can be very confusing amd come with weird thoughts and other sensations
Triggers - the idea that chocolate ect causes migraines I think is in doubt. What I have read that some people get a pre migraine thing - which can be cravings or a funny feeling. (Pre dromal¿?)
You can get medication to try and prevent them but I don't think a GP would referr to neuro unless they were very debilitating or had worrying / unusual symptoms.
I think it's fine to go back to your GP qnd be explicit if you are worried about epilepsy or a ( brain tumor, but it's very unlikely to this with no other systems ).
An aura migraines can almost be spiritual experience for me ( although very annoying) I do find it soo odd that people don't talk about aura. Just make sure you give your self time to rest when you have them. Amd remember the fatigue can last 3 days ( evennif you don't really feel it)

Loiste · 17/08/2025 07:16

Migraines that start only after menopause should always be checked out by a GP. It seems you've had migraines over a longer period of time, and that they are changing shape a bit, perhaps that's why the GP doesn't seem too concerned? Common triggers are irregular sleep patterns, irregular mealtimes, hormone fluctuations - and stress, alcohol and caffeine make things worse for many. Adopting a healthy lifestyle can reduce the frequency, but attacks will probably still occur, due to some unknown trigger. Migraines are the worst, and not knowing exactly what causes them is frustrating, but I think that's the case for many migraine sufferers.
