High and then low temp?

I'm known to be a bit of a worrier when it comes to DC's health (aren't we all?) so a bit of advice would be welcome here.

DS aged 2 has had a high fever for a few days, reaching 40 degrees. We've been giving Calpol and nurofen and it's brought it down a bit, but not by much. He's otherwise okay, though obviously poorly. Nurse checked his ears and throat few days ago - all good.

Spiked a temp of 40 just before bed tonight. Was given Calpol and then nurofen this evening. We checked his temp again at about midnight and it was 35.9, and now it's 36.0. His room is very warm. There's some literature online indicating that low temp after fever could be a warning sign of sepsis!?

Poor thing is knackered and is sleeping peacefully. I know if I call 111 I'll need to wake him. I'm going to stay up and monitor his temp for another 20 mins or so while I decide what to do.

Anyone experienced this before?

Call 111 and ask if this could be sepsis, they really won’t mind. Better to be safe

My daughter and granddaughter had sepsis, has ds urinated as normal, if passed very little and temp still rising call 111.

Oh your poor daughter she granddaughter, I hope they're both ok. He's urinated as much as usual today.

It's up to 36.4 now but apparently temperature can fluctuate with sepsis.

Yes it can , they are both fine now but scary time , If in any doubt ask 111 , your not wasting anyone's time, and they will give you advice .I hope DSmake a good recovery .Ech person is diffrent my granddaughter had 39 temp and was not passing urine well very little, which was one of the signs of sepsis besides high temp, but 35 below is also significant.

Are you using an ear thermometer? If it's used several times in quick succession or needs to be cleaned, I find it can start reading really low. I have given myself a couple of good scares with my kids this way and convinced myself they have sepsis. Hurrah for health anxiety...

Hi, just wanted to see if your DC is ok? Been in my thoughts .

GatorGo · 15/08/2025 09:26

@realsavagelike it was an ear thermometer and yes I think it could've been exactly this!

@Messycoo that's so very kind. He stayed at a reasonable temp all night. He had a bit of a temperature this morning but Calpol brought it down easily. He's in very good spirits now.
