Mouthwash

I’m just looking for a few opinions/experiences (especially if you have good teeth/gums)…

Do you use mouthwash?
If so, what time of day do you use it? (I think it shouldn’t be used after brushing?)
Do you have any recommendations for best (or worst!) brands/makes of mouthwash?

No recommendations, but go alcohol free as I’m sure it was said that, because of the alcohol, it could theoretically cause cancer.

98% of mouthwash is classed as cosmetic ie there is no proven clinical benefit. It is a miracle of advertising.

unless your dentist has advised a specific mouthwash eg high fluoride prescribed or mouthwash for short term use , it is a waste of money.

If you must use it use it at least two hours after brushing as it interacts with toothpaste and also washes the fluoride away .

Use good brushing technique and interdental brushes or floss once a day. Mouthwash is no substitute for that.

I have bad gums and my dentist recommends Listerine gum care and it really helps keep low level infections under control

I suffer from mouth ulcers when I get run down and use corsodyl whenever I feel one coming on. I water it down though as regular use can turn your teeth yellow. Normally though I have listerine in but use it for a refresh during the day when Ive eaten something like garlic bread.

Most mouth washes actually causes me to have mouth ulcers so I have given up on it now!

Thanks, everyone. I’ve never used mouthwash as, like most of you said, had heard there’s no benefits unless for a specific reason.

I’ve noticed in the past few months that my teeth are not looking as good as they used to, so wondered if it was worth trying mouthwash. However, I’m thinking I might try to brush 3 times a day where possible/when at home at the right time. Does anyone else brush 3 times a day? Have you noticed benefits?

My dentist is not a fan of mouthwash because people use it straight after brushing teeth and you shouldn’t rinse your mouth at all after brushing. He said if I wanted to use it, do it say after lunch but not after morning and evening brushes.

Brushing 3 times a day seems a bit much. When were you at the dentist last?

I tend to swill with mouthwash first thing in the morning. I'm a mouth breather overnight (delightful 🤤) plus on medication that gives me a dry mouth. I find the mouthwash helps. I actually use the Aquafresh Big Teeth kids one Blush The minty grown up ones are too harsh for me.

Anything with CPC (Cetylpyridinium Chloride) is apparently great if you're generally feeling under the weather - it has been proven to reduce the severity of covid infections and I'm guessing would help with other colds/flu stuff. If you Google covid and mouthwash you'll find the info.
