In July 2019 I found a lump which turned out to be cancer. I had my five years all clear in August.
The breast clinic is a one stop shop. They have doctors, radiologists and specialist breast care nurses. You will probably have a mammogram first and then see the doctor who will have the results in front of her. The doctor will examine you and then arrange an ultrasound. They may do a biopsy at that point as well.
Then you go back in to see the doctor.
Their expertise is such that they often know at this point whether it’s cancer and they will tell you if they think it’s likely, they won’t send you home without a clue.
This can easily take 3 or 4 hours but at the end you have a good idea what’s wr
ong.

95% of times it is not cancer- but if it is, the treatments are usually v well organised and communicated.
There are brilliant threads on here for support, whatever the outcome. There are also some golden rules- DO NOT GOOGLE. only consult macmillan or breast cancer now websites for info.
Wisdom from one of the veterans on the threads- “ don’t borrow tomorrow’s sorrows” Take one step at a time. And the uncertainty is the hardest part. Good luck.

Have you had your appt through yet @racierach? I found your thread as I’m currently going through the same thing. Small pea sized lump in my armpit, went to the GP this morning fully expecting to be dismissed but she’s worried and put through an urgent ultrasound

How did your appointment go @racierach? I’ve still not heard anything about mine & you reminded me I could also go private. I’m just weighing up whether it’s worth paying the £100 excess to be seen slightly quicker

I've been twice, and both times it's been harmless cysts. The last time, the told me they expect they'll be seeing me again, as there are several cysts which are likely to cause more lumps in the future.

In my appointments, they tell you to allow up to 5 hours, so bring a drink, snacks and something to do. There's generally quite a lot of sitting around and then being called in to see various people. My hospital has a special women only waiting room which is nicer than the main one.

For my appointment, I start by waiting then get called in to see a doctor who takes my medical history and feels the lump. In my last appointment she then called in the consultant who also had a quick feel. He told me that a surprising number of women don't get past this stage as their lump is just normal breast tissue.

In my case, first time round I had a mammogram and then an ultrasound with waiting in between each one, and was then called back in to speak to the doctor who went through the results and told me that it was harmless cysts.

Second time round, I had an impressions and then had fluid drawn from cyst, partly to make it shrink but also to check the fluid, as bloody fluid can also be an indication of something more serious. This was mildly uncomfortable, but only in a skin-prick way - easier than giving blood, or having a vaccination. This was all explained to me at the time.

I was then called back again to the doctor who again went through my results with me, told me what to look out for in future and then sent me home. I had a morning appointment, and spent about two and half hours there.

I obviously haven't gone through the stage of getting bad news, but that should give you a basic idea of what some of the tests are like.

Thanks @UnimaginableWindBirdfor that explanation
I saw consultant yesterday and she examined me. Said she was 95% sure it was a cyst. Probably caused by oestrogen and hormones.
go back next week for mammogram and ultrasound but not particularly worried.

Went back for manmmogram and ultrasound. Confirmed it’s cysts. So we are all good.
hope anyone else going through the same gets the same results.
