CT angiogram- now I feel weird after?

Holymolysummertime · 13/08/2025 16:06

Please tell, is this normal? I feel a bit worried.

I had my Ct coronary angiogram to rule out angina symptoms yesterday.
(Btw I had private stress ECG a week earlier and it was very normal) if relevant.

So yesterday I was given some tablet under my tongue to dilute the vessels, this caused a bad headache on top of my head instantly and I never suffer from any kind of headache.
Then the DR walked in and said my pulse is still very high (80s) and needs to go down for them to do the scan, so they gave me something intravenously to slow my heart down, I was to too stressed to ask what was it but I guess some beta blocker?

Then they did the scan which they also used dye, this gave me big hot flash all over for few seconds.
Anyway after the scan the headache was so bad, I told them, they checked the BP, it was 140/90, I sat down for 30 mins, it got a bit better so I went home after.
I felt my heart just felt funny, like feeling heart in my throat?
I’m Feeling tired, even when going up stairs?
Also had a weird headache, like on each side on and off?
I checked my BP, it seems normal around 120/85..
I did not feel like that before the scan though.
im on long term prednisolone for another non related condition, I told them but it seems they didn’t pay any attention to it really, I don’t think they actually registered it.
is it his normal to feel like that?
I had none of these weird headaches or funny heart feeling before the scan.

I wonder if it’s anything to do with the steroids? Maybe the trauma and shock of yesterday put your body under a lot of stress and you’ve got a possible touch of adrenal insufficiency. I’m not medically trained at all but have been on steroids for several years and know that my body does funny things at times. I would speak with the GP or hospital department you’re under and see what they say.

I actually wasn’t worried about the scan at all, only when the Dr walked in and said they need to lower my heart pulse down, that made me a bit stressed.
I didn’t tell her about the steroids as I told the radiologist assistants before she walked in. I’m on 12.5mg now tapering down from 40mg..

My dad had a CT angio a few days ago, and had one a few years ago. The headache lasted a couple of days for him and it was due to the meds given to dilate the blood vessels. If you’ve had a lot of beta blockers it can mess with you. What was the angio for?

LifeOfAShowGirl · 13/08/2025 17:12

Sorry - just seen that you’ve said it’s for angina. That can be triggered by stress. I’d try to sit down, relax, and drink some water. If it’s still present, either contact the secretaries for your cardio team, or your gp.

Yeah that would stress me too!

Hope you start to feel better soon and good luck with the tapering - currently tapering too, 8.5mg down from 40mg for too long and can’t wait to get off the bloody things 😄

Yeah, it was for angina, but I had private stress ecg last week which they said looks unlikely but who knows.
It just feels weird now my heart.. like hard to describe, heavy, difficult to do a deep breath, it seems all all Hurting inside.
Maybe it’s just psychological, as I keep thinking about it..

I think it could be. My dad was a bit off after his, but because it was his second one he knew it was due to the tablets. If you’re getting pain etc I’d be going to a&e, but otherwise try to take your mind off it tonight (easier said than done I know!) and if you still feel this way tomorrow, reach out to your consultant or gp

This was the first time I ever had the beta blockers. Yesterday through the intravenously.

They can definitely knock you for a few days! My dad has AF, and he’s recently been put into a high dose of beta blockers. It took him a good few weeks to feel normal!

Mischance · 13/08/2025 18:07

I think you need to give some time for the drugs to leave your system. Take it easy for a couple of days.

Also please lovely people, if they would see anything concerning yesterday, how soon they would contact me? Seeing as the DR who gave me the beta blockers was present in the next door.. is it still long waiting time even if something sinister as seen?

It’s totally normal for your heart rate to be a little high when in hospital. Try not to worry. My dad was told 4+ weeks for results.

How fast is your pulse,is it regular. You may have had gtn under your tongue to dilate the arteries which causes headaches plus the beta blocker, they have side effects especially if your arteries, BP and pulse were normal, 80 isn't that high. If you've got pain and shortness of breath I'd call 111. For advice.

My pulse was and always is around 80 especially now I’m on steroids.
The beta blocker yesterday took it down to 60 in few minutes, they kept adding to it, saying give more than 5ml.. I don’t think the Dr knew I’m on stariods.
Im not sure what was it they gave me, I didnt ask.
Prior to the beta blocker I was given the under tongue pill to dilute the vessels, this gave me an instant bad headache especially on top of my head.
It wore off after about 1-2hrs but today kept a bit coming back on and off but not too badly.

My BP was normal prior to all this 120/71 or similar. They checked before I went in.

Don't know why that posted twice, have you checked your pulse this evening, did they tell you to drink a lot of water to flush out the dye. The tablet under the tongue, if it was gtn, dilates blood vessels in your body and brain and causes the headaches. have you got pain in your chest.

Started feeling better on Wednesday evening, however have some mild headache on and off today. The thing is I never get headaches really.
asked chat gpg, that scared me to tell me it’s a very serious and I need a&e immediately?

You don’t. Beta blockers can cause headaches. Call your GP ❤️

AnotherVice · 15/08/2025 13:14

The headache is an entirely normal, expected result of the GTN you had under your tongue to dilate the vessels. They really should have warned you of this. It’s nothing to worry about though.

sashh · 15/08/2025 13:21

The headache is a well known symptom of GTN which is what they gave you to dilate the blood vessels, the problem is that it dilates all of them including in your head.

Thank you, I I had the scan on Tuesday afternoon?
They said it should be ok after one hour.
Is it still normal to have it even today.
Yesterday I had no headache and today back again, exactly in the place it was on Tuesday ( top of my head)
