I went to Boots for advice today. Can't believe what I was told. :-)

My son has a verucca, his first, and the first one I have ever seen. The advice was to rub it with a semi-ripe banana skin for 2 minutes, 2-3 times a day and eat two apples a day. It vaguely reminded me that I had heard banana skin was good for getting rid of them and so much better than using chemicals. Unfortunately when I rubbed, it tickled DS1's foot too much so I have stuck the skin on with some plasters and hope that will help.

No idea where the apples fit in!

The things you learn.

do you ask an assistant or just a random old person?

Saturn74 · 29/05/2008 14:05

Did you have to cross the pharmacist's palm with silver first?

nickytwotimes · 29/05/2008 14:05

!!!!
Were you also advised to turn anti-clockwise 3 times chanting too?

WendyWeber · 29/05/2008 14:05

You're supposed to ask the pharmacist, NAB, not a greengrocer shopping on his lunchbreak

TigerFeet · 29/05/2008 14:06

savoycabbage · 29/05/2008 14:06

paperchain · 29/05/2008 14:06

PMSL - not with a banana skin, surely??

cc21 · 29/05/2008 14:07

PMSL -

janinlondon · 29/05/2008 14:08

Pretty sure you're supposed to bury the banana skin under a full moon for this to work with 100% certainty......

I have just resorted to duct tape for a persistent verruca - the GPs where I work recommend it. I looked it up on web & found:

A recent study found that covering a wart with strong adhesive tape is likely to clear the wart within a month or two. (Duct tape was used in the study.) In this study, about 7 in 10 warts had cleared within two months with using duct tape. It may be worth a try as it is painless. However, further studies are needed to clarify the role of this treatment. The method described in the study was:

The wart was covered with duct tape for six days. If the tape fell off during this time a fresh piece of tape was put on.
After six days, the tape was removed and the wart soaked in warm water for five minutes. After drying it was then gently rubbed with an emery board or pumice stone to get rid of dead tissue from the top of the wart.
The wart was then left uncovered overnight and duct tape put on again the next day.
Treatment was continued for up to two months. (Note: most warts that cleared with duct tape did so within 28 days.)

savoy, lol. That cardboard cutout lady in Boots always makes me jump.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 29/05/2008 14:12

I know maidamess - I'm sure she sneaks up on me. I'm happily doing my shopping and then bam there she is standing right next to me!

maidamess · 29/05/2008 14:13

She's more effective as a store detective than a security guard ever was.

solo · 29/05/2008 14:17

The banana skin if for ordinary warts, I've not heard of them for verucca's though, plus verucca's are painful(I'm told)and the root grows deep. I'd be going to see a proper pharmacist or by some OTC stuff if it were me.
Oh, and with the banana skin, you don't rub it on, you tape it on as you have, pith side down and change it daily

chocaholic73 · 29/05/2008 14:47

banana skin really does work for veruccas - someone told us about it some years ago when DD1 had a verucca that would not go away. I cant quite remember what we did with it ...I think we may have taped a piece of skin on and held it on with an old sock overnight ..for 2 weeks, I think. It is something to do with the chemicals released from the skin of the banana and is certainly not mumbo jumbo

harpomarx · 29/05/2008 14:52

did they sell you the banana skin?

perhaps they have a box under the counter!

MascaraOHara · 29/05/2008 14:53

duct tape. cut to fit verrucca. apply. leave on til it falls off naturally. if verrucca is still ther repeat until verrucca is gone

NotABanana · 29/05/2008 15:00

What a lot of responses! I was reading the terribly sad thread on suicide.

Right, DS1 now in the bath having fallen in a nettle bush so has taken off the banana skin and plaster combo. What should I put on as I would rather avoid anything chemically but he wants it gone before school on Monday.
