Appendicitis?

Looking to see if anyone has had a similar experience? I started having abdominal pain Wednesday eve, just above my belly button and below my ribs. The pain got worse Thursday, to the point I had to leave work and spent the afternoon in bed, and felt very nauseous. I called 111 in the end who advised to speak to my GP next day. The pain subsided early hours of the morning, however moved to my lower right stomach. It's tender to touch, to lay on that side, and hurts when walking. The pain is manageable, and I am not in agony. I saw my doctor today, who queried appendicitis. He said he couldn't rule it out, however didn't feel I was in enough pain for it to be my appendix. I was advised to watch, wait and monitor. My partner is telling me to go to A&E, however I cannot justify as the pain is manageable. Has anyone else had a similar experience?

Pain starting around the belly button and moving down to the right plus vomiting were my first symptoms. The really awful pain (and a temperature) came later and came and went quite a bit. Have you looked at the NHS page? It says some people don't get very bad pain. I was told repeatedly I didn't have appendicitis despite having classic symptoms. Better safe than sorry.

@AudiobookListenerThank you for your reply. I had a look at the NHS page, and it all honestly I was expecting the GP to do further testing, but I feel that he didnt really listen to me (I was in a out in a couple of minutes). The pains been there 16 hours and it's isn't improving, so will either give 111 another call, or head to A&E if it worsens.

A GP can’t do further tests for suspected appendicitis. You need a surgeon. We have kids who appear really well, with normal bloods who turn out to have it. They catch us out!

Lindy2 · 08/08/2025 17:31

The above belly button pain that moves to the lower right is classic appendicitis.

I was in hospital with extreme pain and vomiting. I went straight to A&E as the pain got so bad so quickly. I practically crawled into the triage area. The blood tests said no to appendicitis.

They kept me in overnight. The next morning the pain was gone and I felt much better but they did an ultrasound anyway. It clearly showed appendicitis and I was operated on that morning. A Sunday morning. My appendix burst as they took it out the appendicitis was so advanced!

12 hours of pain and symptoms. No symptoms on the day it actually burst.

Appendix is a very tricky thing in some cases.

GoldenRolo · 08/08/2025 20:06

@Lindy2Oh wow, that sounds pretty awful. I bet your were very glad that they did the ultrasound. I'm hoping that mine may be something else, I'm going to give it until the morning, then head to A&E if the pain is still there. Thank you for your reply.

My son was sent home twice by A&E because they didn't think he was in enough pain. Then his appendix burst.

Go to A&E and push for a scan to rule it out. A twisted fallopian tube is also a possibility in a woman.

Longingforspringtime · 08/08/2025 20:26

When I had appendicitis I had pain for a day around my belly button. It wasn’t too bad. The next day it had moved to the lower right quadrant and was absolute agony. I could hardly breathe. You don’t sound as if you’re in that much pain, but it’s best to get it checked out in hospital where they can do a scan.

MummyChocolateMonster · 08/08/2025 20:26

I’d go to A&E now. I had appendicitis last year - bad tummy ache for 2 days around belly button then it shifted to lower right.
My pain was manageable but I gather the appendix was in a bad way - I know because they scanned me (I’m late 50s so they had to rule out other causes) and I was at risk of rupture which thankfully didn’t happen.
They often treat with IV antibiotics these days to get it under control then offer you an appendectomy (keyhole) at a later date.
If it ruptures it’s very serious and no longer a keyhole op.

Oldernotwizer · 08/08/2025 20:33

They should be able to tell if it’s in the right place to be appendicitis upon palpating your tummy. I would go back and ask to be examined. My daughter was diagnosed with suspected appendicitis by the out of hours gp at the hospital who referred her to the surgical team there. She had her appendix out the following day.

Mine was perforated and I wasn’t in terrible pain, more a feeling of tenderness and being feverish and unwell.
First diagnosed as ovulation pain, then when it didn’t subside I had a number of examinations to exclude other causes.
Surgeon said it was the biggest appendix he’d ever seen <proud>
Good luck, hope you get it sorted and feel better soon.

autienotnaughty · 08/08/2025 20:46

I presented with the symptoms of appendicitis and was in a lot of pain. It was a kidney infection.

legalseagull · 08/08/2025 20:46

Go to A&E now. Don’t wait until the morning. Appendix rupture. I had NO pain with mine, just terrible fever, diarrhoea and nausea. It’s only when the dr pushed down on it and quickly released that I felt pain. The quick release, rather than the push was the test. I had a god awful infection all in my bowel from it. You’ll need surgery asap

autienotnaughty · 08/08/2025 20:51

Dd was diagnosed with a grumbling appendix they removed the appendix during a flair up only to discover it wasn’t inflamed but they did spot a 5cm cyst on her ovary.

ReceiveIt · 08/08/2025 20:55

Another one that didn't have a lot of pain with appendicitis. I had fever, nausea, and a weird tingling in my hands and arms. I felt pain in my right side when I coughed, or when the doctors pushed down and quickly released as a pp mentioned.

ReceiveIt · 08/08/2025 20:58

Spring back test.

Appendicitis?
Fooshufflewickjbannanapants · 08/08/2025 21:13

I had those exact symptoms and went via 111 to hospital they were sure it was my appendix, had a scan etc and it turns out I have a kidney stone. Never had one before and am due back for a scan to see if they need to operate.

MrsBeltane · 08/08/2025 21:15

I didn't have a lot of pain, but it was very painful to stand up straight. Wandered around bent over for a couple of days before I ended up in A&E.

mamabearlove · 08/08/2025 21:22

Definitely go to AE . Your GP sounds very irresponsible!
My son had appendicitis and was not in severe pain and was revising for his A-Level Geography whilst waiting to go to theatre. His appendix was very unhealthy .

Losingit2024 · 08/08/2025 21:32

Your symptoms mirror what my husband had. His later burst and it was absolutely awful. Massive messy surgery and weeks in hospital and 6 months of daily doctor visits to dress the wound! Not to scaremonger but I would go to A&E, if you have it they’ll try and get it out before it bursts! Good luck

GoldenRolo · 08/08/2025 21:35

Thank you all for your replies. My GP did examine my stomach, and said that my pain is in the appendix area, however to observe, as he didnt feel that my pain was severe enough. My little one is in bed, and my partner is away for the night. I will most definitely go to A&E in the morning, and will report back. Thank you all again.

Wow I could have written this. Exactly how I was with my appendicitis. I wasn’t rolling round in agony I was just sore, tender and felt sickly, no energy. My pain was in the exact places as yours. I would go to A&E if I was you. I had mine removed before it ruptured.

Junaluma · 09/08/2025 06:36

I had pain that would come and go, it even sometimes reacted to pain relief. I had a fever, bloating, fatigue, flank pain, no appetite & belly pain (right hand side of stomach) I could barely walk without being in pain. I went to a walk in centre and they told me it was a sprained muscle which I wasn’t so sure about.

Later the same day, the pain intensified and called 999 (I could barely speak on the phone to the emergency services and I was sweating in pain as I could not get comfortable in any position without extreme pain) who told me to go to A&E immediately. I waited ages to be seen and I am so thankful to have had a thorough doctor who immediately recognized it as appendicitis. I spent overnight in the hospital and wasn’t allowed to leave until my fever had gone down. The nurses and doctors were all so great and really reassured me then I had emergency surgery in the morning.

Please, please go to A&E. Asking for a second opinion might have saved my life.
