I just had a call from my surgery, asking me to collect a blood test form as I'm at risk of diabetes.
My eyes fell out of my head.
Apparently a blood test showed increased risk back in 2017.
This is the first I have heard of it.

Here is my 'risk'
I have no family history.
I am of Indian descent which slightly increases my risk.
I am towards the lower end of the healthy weight range.
I do a lot of exercise.
I have low BP, OK cholesterol, never had GD.
I have a good diet.

Anyway, I've arranged a phone appt with the GP to clarify. I don't think I need the blood test (I've had many regular blood tests since 2017 and nothing has been flagged up), but I do want the flag removed so that it doesn't look like I'm not engaging with health professionals.

You know why to see if you have type 2 diabetes or not what more needs to be said

I will ask why (since 2017) this is the first I have heard of my (apparent) risk and why I wasn’t invited to be tested before now.
I will ask how high my risk was in 2017.
All reasonable. I’d rather find out more than blindly go and get a test.

You should also contact an optician about having your eyes put back in your head! 👀

There has been a national drive recently to run checks on patient records and identify if a patient has ever had pre-diabetes, and if they had, they should have an annual blood test to monitor it. So it is nothing special to do with you, or your gp practice, just a policy thing.

Anyway, thanks for the insights. I’m on holiday for the next week, so I’ll come back and report on what the GP says (if anyone’s interested)

I've just had a test come up as 42, and referred to diabetes prevention, which I have declined. But I will make an effort to lose some weight and do some weights. Being menopausal is a big trigger. If the next test is high again, I will request a proper fasting test.

Fasting makes no difference to hba1c which is a 3 month average, doesn’t need fasting, and is the basis diabetes is diagnosed on

Wishiwasatailor · 10/08/2025 23:17

Fasting glucose isn't a test for t2d.
the hba1c shows your blood sugar level over the last 3 months and is the standard test for t2 diabetes. There's lots of advice online on reversing prediabetes.

Follow up: GP called and says there is wrong code on my file. I have never had a HbA1c test, or have had reason to have had one.
She will remove the code.
