HELP! Burnt neck and chest with hot oil

Hi all,
Was cooking dinner before and the hot oil splashed back onto my chest, lip and neck. Took a cold shower for 10 minutes. Chest and lip are still red but my neck has started to blister (I’ll attack a pic) .

Do I need to go to A&E for it? Or any creams/remedies would be greatly appreciated!

That looks more like someone threw some hot oil at you. How did so much splash up?
Are you really ok and it really was an accident?

I’d stay in a tepid shower until all heat and initial pain is gone then put some antiseptic cream on it. I wouldn’t go to hospital for I’m sure someone will be along in a minute to tell you to go to A&E.

NotPerfectlyAdverage · 05/08/2025 16:02

I would, sorry. They advise hospital for burns to joints so I'm guessing the same for neck as you move your head

EnFlique · 05/08/2025 16:03

When DD burned her arm on the kettle we were advised 20 minutes minimum under cold water.

Any burn bigger than your hand, or on the face, neck, hands, feet needs medical attention, so yes you should go to a&e.

Thank yous! @BeltaLodaLife I live alone with 2 young dc so it was definitley my carelessness haha. I was frying aubergine slices and had them in water before, thought I’d got the excess water off but it all splashed back as soon as I put them in the hot oil. 😫

Forgive me for asking/insinutating. Previous job makes me always a little sceptical of things like this.

If the kids are safe to play alone then get yourself into a tepid shower and stay there for as long as you can.

No worries at all! It does look bad 😖There’s a pharmacy down the road from me so will head there now. If they say A&E will drop dc off at my dads and head down there.

Hot oil splashes burn so much longer than with hot water. I would go to a and e.

Beeloux · 05/08/2025 17:10

So I went to the pharmacy and they the receptionist said it looked bad and said shed ask the pharmacist. He didn’t look at it but gave her some dressings to give me to put on it.

Not sure if I should go to A&E or watch how it is after the dressing. So typical I have my friend due to come over as she is visiting and staying overnight. 😖

I got in trouble from the nurse at minor injuries for putting Germolene on the burn when DD burned her arm on the cooker. She said not to put anything on a burn other than petroleum jelly to keep it moisturised.

Beeloux · 05/08/2025 17:14

This is it now, the redness seems to have went down a bit and it no longer stings. It does feel like I have a lump in my throat when I swallow.

Do you have a minor injuries unit near you? I'd get it checked if it feels like there's a lump in your throat. Burnt skin can tighten whilst healing, so better to get it checked if you can.

WonderingWanda · 05/08/2025 17:18

Get cold water on it, even if its a cold wet flannel and you keep replacing it.

Starlight7080 · 05/08/2025 17:21

That looks painful.
No useful advice . But does any one else remember grandparents putting butter on burns 😆

LIZS · 05/08/2025 17:31

Think it is recommended 20 mins minimum. If it has affected your lips and has blistered elsewhere you need medical attention asap.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 05/08/2025 17:48

Because it’s the throat that’s classed as a high risk area, I think you need a&e (sorry.)

Im a nurse.

ginasevern · 05/08/2025 18:22

I had a similar thing happen with battered onion rings years ago. The hot oil went all over one side of my face. I honestly thought I was scarred for life, it looked horrific. I did drive to A&E and they gave me some fantastic cream (sorry, don't remember the name). It cleared it up in no time and took the pain/burning away. I honestly think without that intervention it would have left a scar. So my advice is to go to A&E.

Anything bigger than a fifty pence piece burn needs medical attention so yes I’d go to hospital to be checked. They can quickly cause infection if not treated properly.

ChirpyLilac · 05/08/2025 21:14

I burnt my hand Christmas Day cooking, hot water spilled down it, it was red and had a little blister so I done all the usual recommendations- 9 hours later the blister was huge I had to go to A&E and have the blister popped, dressings put on and a tetanus jab! Call 111 for advice and send them the picture they will be able to advise x

DurinsBane · 05/08/2025 21:27

I wouldn’t have done initially, but now you mention the lump in your throat I would. Too late now as they would be closed, but if you have a minor injuries or an urgent care they can deal with it a lot quicker than A&E!

Justthethingsthatyoudointhisgarden · 05/08/2025 21:41

If this ever happens to anyone, please go to Minor Injuries or ring 111. Do not ask on Mumsnet.

ThreeLocusts · 05/08/2025 21:48

Hi OP, I've had this problem and it healed without a doctors' visit. Not meant to trivialise, but to reassure - everyone is different and if you're worried, there's no harm done at least getting advice from 111 and taking it from there.

In my case, I had thoughtlessly left water at the bottom of the pan I put the frying oil in, and once the oil got hot enough, big globs of it started jumping out with the steam. More stupidly yet, I then leaned down to wipe some of the hot oil off the floor before I'd taken the pan off the heat... resulting in a big glob of boiling oil landing right on my head.

Cue me standing for minutes with me head under the water tap. The next day I had to go on a trip, and I ended up discussing the situation with a French pharmacist who recommended a disinfectant and leaving it in peace as much as possible.

Of course, maybe it was my hair that prevented the worst. Anyway, don't kick yourself for having left moisture on the aubergines. At least you had something cooking in the oil....

Travsmam · 06/08/2025 12:32

Yep, and bumps on the head 😂😂😂😂

Melonjuice · 06/08/2025 13:47

Go to the pharmacy they are trained to dispense medicine which will help
a&E will just send you off with some cream - it looks painful but it’s not that bad

Ivy888 · 06/08/2025 15:18

Don’t put any creams on it and definitely get medical help!

Beeloux · 08/08/2025 15:03

Hi all and thanks for your replies ☺️ Just to update, I didn’t end up getting to A&E. Ds2 would not settle at all (teething). It took over 2 hours of tears to get him to sleep and I was so tired I ended up falling asleep shortly after.

When I woke up in the morning the blistering had gone and the lump sensation in the back of my throat had too. I went to another pharmacy who said to keep using the dressings and using Vaseline to keep it moist. They said start using bio oil in a week.

Thank you all again. I hope it won’t scar!
