If you are on immunosuppressives, do you wear a mask when flying?

Taking my first flight to London since being on biologics and I'm not sure whether to mask or not. I'm keen to know what others do. Thanks

I'm not immunosuppressed but if I was then i would wear a decent mask . I've caught covid twice and both times were on a plane.

RachelsPeeves · 04/08/2025 18:52

I don't but my consultant did prescribe a course of antivirals to take with me incase of covid. I'm not convinced unless it's properly fitted mask and a medical type it would make much difference.

Yes I do.
Before COVID I used to pick up a bug on every single flight. I actually used to contemplate wearing a mask but it wasn't a thing. Ended up with pneumonia one time.
Since covid I wear an ffp3 (properly fitted high grade) mask on every flight and it seems to help. I have many times been the only person on a flight wearing a mask but when you're sitting next to someone with a hacking cough it's better than nothing. You do get some hostile looks, don't know why but it seems to annoy some people. I was once sat across the isle from a woman who sounded dreadful, coughing like she had a really bad chest infection. Every time she coughed she turned away from her companions and towards me.

If it's a long flight I do remove it briefly mid flight for food and drink but otherwise keep it on especially at take off and landing.

I also take antibac / antivirus wipes and wipes down the tray and seat arms

Yes, and I’ll be wearing one at Gatwick as well.

And as pp said, carrying wipes and anti-viral gel.

I might wear an explanatory lanyard, might not. I’ll see how I feel.

chances of catching something on a plane aren’t low. Some folk might give you a look, but they sure as shit won’t be worrying about the impact on you of catching something. Given that it seems a number of people are more concerned about what someone will say about them wearing a mask even when they are contagious with something nasty, than they are about knowingly infecting people, I’d wear one (FFP3). Hope you have a good trip.

HelpMeGetThrough · 05/08/2025 06:10

No, I’m immunosuppressed as on biologic infusions and Methotrexate. I don’t wear a mask anywhere and haven’t at airports either. Had a few very long flights last year and have been fine.

Not something that has crossed my mind to be honest.

Backtothebestbits · 05/08/2025 06:17

Yes. Why take the chance, it’s a no brainer from me.

I am but very low dose. Main times are worry about are during season changes. First and second week of September as kids go back to school - always get a cold! Also around May and June for someone reason, changes of season I guess. Maybe Feb when it's the depths of winter. Also if the booster has worn off just before the latest one. I try not to be late in getting the boosters. Hand sanitiser as much as I remember.

I also take vitamin d and K2 spray actually all year round! Maybe not in June-July if I am outside a lot but all other months.

Rarely ill.

Londonnight · 05/08/2025 06:53

My son is on inflixmab. He has been for years. He never wears a mask when travelling. I don't think he has ever thought about. He doesn't get anymore ill than anyone else.

HelpMeGetThrough · 05/08/2025 07:36

Issue I have is not catching other people’s bugs but if I cut myself. It doesn’t heal properly and always ends up infected.

CandidOP · 05/08/2025 08:16

Yes I do. Also take anti bac and wipes for trays, toilet door handles etc. Not just for covid as I tend to pick up any old respiratory virus going around which always becomes more serious and I think why would I spend thousands of pounds on a holiday to risk being ill?
I also still carry anti bac around with me every day and just clean my hands before eating or drinking anything. Seems to work - not had anything for a year despite several long haul flights with people coughing away for hours. Remember to change your mask regularly.

CraftandGlamour · 05/08/2025 15:12

Thanks all, I really appreciate your input and experiences.

I am one of those people who cant shake a chest infection normally (I've had pneumonia in the past). I'll mask up, face the disapproving looks and carry on with my antibacterial spray :)

I’m on biologics and don’t wear a mask. Logically I should but I’m already anxious at flying and wearing a mask makes me unbearably panicked/have a panic attack.

tothelefttotheleft · 05/08/2025 20:51

I would wear a mask.

My neighbour was just telling me that her grandchild flew back from holiday covered up because they had chicken pox.
