Not getting on with contact lenses. Are they just not an option for some people's eyes?

Hi. I'm currently on a trial for contact lenses. I've been having a lot of problems putting them in. As soon as the lens makes contact with my eye, the eye starts watering profusely. It also feels really uncomfortable when it's in, and I end up wanting to take the lenses out soon afterwards. I've heard of some people having eyes that "reject" having lenses in them and wondering if that is happening for me.

im having the same issue, just in one eye. Have tried 4 different brands. They irritate my eyes, one settles down butbone doesn't and eventually I have to take them out as the itching and sneezing get too much.

With itching and sneezing, it sounds like it could be an allergy?

I never got on with them that well, and ended up getting my eyes lasered instead.

What kind have you tried? I couldn’t get on with hard lenses, but soft lenses work fine.

teksquad · 04/08/2025 01:28

yeah i think you might be right as I am allergic to the sticky pads on ECG leads, a preservative in vaccinations, latex etc.

The ones I tried were different brands of varifocal soft ones.

I have the most picky eyes in the world and dailies total 1 are the best for me, I can’t wear any others

I'm on a contact lens trial too and finding it a right faff. I am constantly aware of them (I'm told this will pass) and it takes me so so long to get them in. They're monthlies and I worry about losing them.

Going to try a weeks trial of dailys next.

Optometrist here:
You need a dry finger and a wet lens. Sometimes if you've tried to put a lens in multiple times it can get a bit dry, so if that happens get some conditioning drops like these

or just some saline to re-wet.

You can also experiment with different positions, some people find it easier to look down into a mirror, others to look straight ahead.

Finally, there are also some brands/types which are easier than others to insert. Acuvue are the hardest. Thicker lenses such as a monthly, can be easier to start with, then you can swap to another brand when you have the hang of it.
Contact lens trials are designed to find the best lens for you, so let us know if it's not working.

You need different lenses. I tried 2-3 different ones till I found the right ones for me. Precision 1 lenses are quite expensive but they agree with me.

the others were like you described, so uncomfortable and eyes watering it was like my eyes were rejecting them! My eyes are prone to dryness.
