any suggestions for a light tea for an 8 mo just getting over a tummy bug?

He's had some porridge this morning and been bf, plus he had some pasta with a plain tomato sauce at lunchtime with some spinach and a yoghurt. He's just refused his afternoon milk so I'd like to give him something light but filling. Normally I'd give him some chicken or fish and veggies with maybe some cheese and fruit for afters. I was thinking some plain veggies and maybe some toast with a scrape of philly but I'm not sure... it's a bit boring for him poor love

wmmc, is cheese ok? I was worried it would be too rich for him. He didn't have diahoerrea but violent projectile vomiting. He's been fine for 24 hours now though and I think he's quite hungry despite refusing his milk.

Yes, cheese is fine. Do try stewed apples though, just microwave an apple, it will get things moving and also the pectin stimulates the production of stomach enzymes so other foods are easier to digest.

Usually you avoid dairy for a few days post gastro bugs but if he's had yoghurt and porridge (assume you used cow's milk) with no problems, then a mild cheese will probably be fine.

What about chicken, rice and veg? Keep offering fluids.

BTW it's fine for them not to eat for up to five days providing they are breastfeeding adequately. So if it comes back - don't be reluctant to withdraw all food for another 24 hours.

thanks wmmc and showofhands... I've got some chicken I was going to put in the risotto tonight so I'll give him a tiny bit with some veggies and I'll try the apple in the microwave trick. I used to give him raw grated apple gone brown for an upset tummy as my mum always said that the enzymes when it oxidises are good for settling a tummy. Maybe she was right after all!

Just out of interest, do you peel the apple before you microwave it? I presume you peel, quarter and zap?

Well actually it depends how lazy you are

Personally I stick the entire thing in a bowl and nuke it - the flesh of the apple will bubble out and then when it's done you can just scrape the centre out and chuck the rest away . I sometimes core it and stick sultanas in though too.

Rice cooked in some chicken stock was recommended to me by my doctor when dd was poorly. She has loved it ever since!

Hmmmm chicken and veggies did not go down well, hardly ate a drop, is now screaming in pain again. I think we'll be going to casualty again tonight

Hope he's better soon for you If it helps for tomorrow and future tummy upsets I find the BRAT thing works well - Banana, Rice, Apple, Toast - though it's easy to use a bit of a combination - eg make a little bit of rice pudding served with apple puree or banana on toast. I've always found it useful in settling stomachs and even stick to it myself if I come over all dodgy.

oh lovely artydeb, thanks for that. It was so hard to work out what to give him as he was so hungry earlier today. He's quiet now but he's been having spasmodic pain all evening. Love the acronym too, can't be hard to forget BRAT
