What is this longstanding 'little cough' and what can I do about it?

Late 50s - generally fit and well, don't drink alcohol, never smoked, no issues with indigestion. But for most of my adult life have had 'a little cough'. I've often tried to find a tenuous reason for it - walking into a stressful situation, feather pillows, cats. it's a tickly little cough that comes on suddenly. If I have a drink to hand or can have a good cough, it goes. Sometimes I feel the need to clear my throat.

I rarely go to the doctors but have over the years consulted my GP about it, not because it's severely impacting my life, just because I thought it best to do so. I've had a couple of chest xrays - 20 years apart - all fine. Last time I visited I saw an Associate who prescribed Omeprazole. It didn't help my cough and gave me stomach ache so I stopped taking it.

I need to visit people's homes with work - not a care role. They are calm, clean homes, occasionally with pets, and often my 'little cough' starts as though caused by the change of environment; no stress involved in the visits.

Does anyone experience anything similar? What can I do to stop or control it?

It might be an allergy that could benefit from antihistamine. Try some, see if it helps.

Have you been tested for asthma? Feno testing or blood test (to check eosinophils) now first line.
