HELP!! I took my 2 week old to the docs yesterday and he has an eye infection, thrush in his mouth, a vitamin d defiency & is constipated. Other than that he's healthy & putting on plenty of weight. I've got all sorts of medicines for him but he's struggling to sleep for more than about 30mins & is exhausted.
Any ideas on how I can soothe him to sleep?

Take him for a walk in his pram or a car will always get them to sleep. Failing that just a cuddle, softly rubbing his back is wuite soothing. Good luck and i hope he gets better soon :0

Thanks Lully, cuddling doesn't seem to be helping a great deal so i'll try taking him for a walk x

vitamin d deficiency? how do you know?

is he breastfed?

lulumama · 28/05/2008 12:35

and how constipated?

LizSpain · 28/05/2008 12:48

No I wasn't producing enough milk so he's on formula but he has loads of spots which are much better even after 1 dose of vit d thats how doc knew.

He goes to toilet once a day which is normal but he gets a really bad belly for about 4 hrs before & he really struggles to get it out bless him x

hmm, i would be dubious that you were not producing enough milk.. did you introduce formula very quickly? if you are breastfeeding at all.. then you can reestablish supply and go back to breast milk

milk can take a few days to come in, and when it does, babies need to feed a lot to make sure supply meets demands, and that can lead mums to think that there is not enough milk

are you making up the formula correctly so that there is enough water in it?

if he is passing a poo everyday, he is not constipated, is the poo hard or soft? is he pulling his legs up?

lulumama · 28/05/2008 12:53

he might be overstimulated and that is making it harder for him to settle, taking him out, swaddled in his pram or in a sling might well help him settle down

i am so sorry but I just read it as 'how do I put my two week old pony to sleep'

i think i need some sleep.

sorry i am of no help whatsoever, but i do hope he feels better soon, poor chap.

I am not producing milk anymore I really wanted to breast feed and was very upset that I couldn't as I felt i'd failed him so i'd rather not talk about it. He eats alot (120ml every 4 hrs) and has done right from a few days old.

I've checked formula measurements & I always do them exact so I know they're fine, poo is sometimes soft, someitmes hard but doctor gave me some drops for his tummy but yes he pulls his legs up.

He likes being swaddled so i'll give that a go

LizSpain please dont feel bad about not breast feeding, the decision is yours and you should not feel like you have failed. You only gave birth 2 weeks ago, go easy on yourself. Im sure the doctors know how to treat him and he will make a quick recovery. Its very scary being a new mum at the best times, just give him lots of kisses and cuddles and if you are still concerned go back to your GP. Hope things calm down soon x

lulumama · 28/05/2008 14:25

i am sorry. but if you do want to try to get breastfeeding going again, it is possible with a lot of determination. hope the swaddling works. remember, he is still adjusting to being out of the womb so each hour of each day is different for him and for oyu right now.
