Has anyone tried antihistamines for nausea?

I have suffered with digestive issues for decades;- IBS and functional dyspepsia.

Been really struggling with many issues gut wise since perimenopause (and a lot of life stresses) hit around 6 years ago. One of my many symptoms which is becoming a real nuisance is nausea. I have tried all the natural remedies such as ginger etc but nothing helps. My gastroenterologist prescribed me Ondansetron but I don't like they way they make me feel, I end up feeling jittery and angsty (I really don't need anymore anxiety in my life right now).

I have just googled what are the safest remedies for nausea and it comes up with antihistamines. Has anyone tried this?

Not tried that but came on to say I find propranolol helps with my IBS/perimenopausal nausea even though it’s not indicated for that (I don’t think so anyway)

I’m on Cyclizine for nausea. I’m not sure if it’s an antihistamine or not, I’ve tried a couple of other ones but they made me jittery and restless like you described. The Cyclizine works well for me without the jittery anxious feeling. Could be worth asking if you could try them. I get them on prescription so I’m not sure if you can buy them or not.

Peptobismol is excellent. I do take antihistamines. Trouble is you can't always take them with actual anti nausea drugs -travel sickness pills are anti histamines. I like ondansetron, a lifesaver for me . Have you tried Buccastem or cyclizine?

Promethazine or avomine

I was given phenergan for 24/7 morning sickness. It really helped, but did make me very sleepy.

Yes.

it works for me, mostly.

the exception is when I am in so much pain it triggers nausea.

Betahistine - no side effects

Oh that's interesting. I was going to ask my GP about propranolol as I have terrible anxiety and antidepressants upset my IBS. I've heard that propranolol is good for the physical issues which come with anxiety which I really need help for right now.

That's great thanks, I'll look into that.

I do always have a bottle of pepto at home but you aren't supposed to take that for a long time so I was hoping for something else.
I've not tried Buccastem or cyclizine, will look into those thanks.

I used to have to take phenergan as a child as I wouldn't sleep, used to completely whack me out. Turns out it's ADHD!

I have tried it since but it does leave me very drowsy.

I find you don't need to take Pepto long term but it's good peak nausea to take the edge off. You can buy Buccastem over the counter, by the way, unlike most good nausea meds.

I was given Phenergan for hyperemesis in pregnancy . It's an old school anti histamine so makes you drowsy.
