DH Very high cholesterol

DH (mid 50s) has very high cholesterol- 8.2 at a health check. HDL is 2.6 also quite high.

He's thin and low BP and the Qrisk score is 7.5 so rated as low, but I am concerned about the cholesterol.

He was fasting at the time and wondered if that could have raised it, but his diet is not great and he drinks a bit too much.

Do you think the doctor will contact him and suggest statins? Any advice welcome. he has crohn's disease on immunosuppressants, doesn't eat red meat. Exercises

I know nothing of it , until yesterday my DH told me MIL was told by the GP to eat a handful of walnuts daily so she does so. News to me but hey, maybe will help someone

My husband was the same, in fact his was nearly 9! His total was high but his HDL was high and his good to bad ratio was not bad. BMI in healthy range. Not offered statins as his overall risk not deemed high enough ( I wanted him to but he wanted to try diet).
His diet was fairly healthy as far as main meals concerned but his snacks weren’t the best.
He cut chocolate, switched to filter coffee, gave up cheese, butter and bacon etc. Daily oats with plant sterol yoghurt.
His numbers are just a little over now with low LDL and Triglycerides I suspect he could get statins when he’s over 60 which would make me feel a bit more relaxed.

Thanks, that's reassuring. I read your post to DH. It's good to hear it went down.
Did they follow up / check it yearly perhaps?

Maybe I'm over worrying.

Mine was over 9. I was fit and slim and vegan. I’m now on statins.

Wbeezer · 29/07/2025 21:45

No scans, but he got called back after a few months to see if his numbers improved. As they had improved, he’s now getting tested every two years. I don’t think they do scans unless you have other worrying symptoms. DH has good blood pressure and no symptoms so no scans. I looked into private scans but we decided against it.

Wbeezer · 29/07/2025 21:50

Not everyone can reduce numbers by diet, it’s not a straight link between what you eat and high cholesterol, it can be genetic. The nurse was actually quite surprised DHs fell so much, but he’s quite good at forming habits.
Just ask for a follow up if you aren’t offered one.

Thanks everyone

I'm on statins went from 7.8 down to 3.7. They worked for me and no side effects either.

Same as my Dh. It’s hereditary apparently.
