If you’re been prescribed this, what is it for? I thought it was a drug for anxiety or depression, but I don’t have those?

I’ve had it prescribed for arthritis pain which disturbs my sleep. Having read up about the possible side effects I have decided not to take it.

Migraines while pregnant. Worked but knocked me out.

Acute postnatal anxiety, of which Insomnia was one of the chief symptoms. It's safe when breastfeeding apparently. 10 years later I still use it for Insomnia.

I’ve been prescribed this in the past to help me sleep.

Nerve pain for me too. I was in terrible pain with severe swelling in my leg caused DVT. The swelling was pressing on nerves. I was told it was an old fashioned anti depressant which wasn’t widely used anymore but was very effective at calming nerve endings. After many combinations of pain killers adding amitriptyline to the mix really helped. I also slept like a lamb while I was on it so I can see why they would give it for insomnia.

Recently, I have also been offered it for IBS which I declined because it made me feel spaced out.

Diverticulitis. It's a tiny dose compared to what ia required how mh concerns. I imagine it's not a common medicine for mh problems now but as you can see is helpful for so much more.

BCBird · 26/07/2025 16:43

I had for pain
I couldn't get on with them. I remember someone discussing depression. I.made it clear I was not depressed

Adenforone · 27/07/2025 13:50

I’ve checked and it’s for 10mg, so it looks like . It seems a bit of a marmite drug but glad it’s helping some people. A couple of years ago a neurologist mentioned they mght help for migraines. I don’t get migraines, but he said they might be “migraineless migraines”.
For those with fluctuating conditions, has it helped? I’d be willing to try it for the TMJ if overall it helped for the days it’s unmanageable, but it goes on for days and days. Mostly it’s manageable. What I really need on those unmanageable days is something to knock me out until the days pass and pain subsides enough so I can sleep through it again.

It tends to be lower doses for nerve pain/migraine prevention then depression. I've been on it for both nerve stuff and migraine prevention for years but recently it's not been as effective so I need to research alternatives.

Bless you @Adenforone, I'm riding the long covid train too and it's Not Fun. Very early on a lovely lovely locum GP who was the first to suggest it might be such asked me if I was depressed. I made her laugh when I said "No. I'm just really pissed off!".

If you do decide to take it, take it early on in the evening as it may will affect how you feel/perform in the morning Flowers

Thank you and sorry you’re on this train too.

I've been prescribed it for mental health and pain. Not sure how anyone can work when taking this as it wiped me out for most the next day. I won't take it anymore.

Piggywaspushed · 29/07/2025 09:10

I take it because not being able to sleep wipes me out more!

People react differently to medicines. Just because it’s your experience does not mean it will be the next person’s. Everyone is different. I take it and as long as I get 7-8hrs sleep after I take it, I’m absolutely fine to work and go about normal life. If my sleep is cut short (have to get up early for some reason) then I’m wiped out during the morning but fine after that.

SkibidiSigma · 30/07/2025 07:48

I take up to 30mg a night for chronic pain, in combination with duloxetine (which is a newer antidepressant also used for pain). I've taken amitriptyline for years and do find it helps. It does make you tired the next day to start with but your body will adjust.

Definitely worth a go with what you've described

autienotnaughty · 30/07/2025 07:49

I haven’t taken it yet but 10mg for nerve pain I think low dose treats pain /helps sleep and high dose is depression

Slimagain · 30/07/2025 07:55

I have it for chronic insomnia. I tried everything. GP prescribed Mirtazipine (massive weight gain ) off licence Melotonin (no effect) . Then I hurt my back and was prescribed amitriptyline for nerve pain.. and bingo. Free from the horror of early morning waking . Go to sleep fine at 11/11:30pm but awake by 2am. It’s a miserable existence and affects every part of life. 20mg of Amitriptyline a night has changed my life for the last 8 years.
