Just that really! My DD2 is 4 weeks old, I can't remember from DD1 how long we used cotton wool and water for and when we went to wipes....any ideas anyone??

I went from cotton wool to washable wipes which I still used with water. For poo I get the worst off with toilet paper.
You can use facecloths or buy ready made washable wipes from any of the nappy supplies websites. That way you still get to use just water, but without all the faff of cotton wool.
Most commercial wipes are full of chemicals that you wouldn't want near your own bum let alone a tiny baby's sensitive botty.

I used wipes from day one

kittywise · 27/05/2008 19:17

After d2 I always used wipes

What's wrong with cotton wool and water? I still use it on dd and she's 2.

HensMum · 27/05/2008 19:23

I think it's no products, including wipes, at all for 6 weeks. I still use cotton wool or a flannel on my 7 month old. I just never found that wipes get the poo off properly! Tesco have plain white flannels for 20p each, or you could cut up an old towel to be really thrifty.

Flamesparro · 27/05/2008 19:24

I think I tried every now and then from about a week - both of mine seemed to go very red as soon as the wipe touched them, when they stopped doing that, I used wipes.

I do love washable wipes for their grippiness... but I am lazy (a cloth nappy user who finds washable wipes a faff )

urgh cotton wool gives me the heebie jeebies i always used bounty/water and later bounty/chamomile tea (cold!)

wobbegong · 27/05/2008 21:39

I used cotton wool and water, followed by a pat with a 29p Ikea hand towel. DD is six months. Why stop? It works and is cheap.

pofaced · 27/05/2008 21:43

I always did cotton wool and water all the way through 3DDs (now long past nappies)... wipes only for nappy changes when they were out and about. Think about it: would you prefer to wash yourself with wipes or water?

Always used cotton wool and water, and camomile tea if a sore bum. Ditto, it's cheap and works and certainly will cause less stress if any than wipes.

IdrisTheDragon · 27/05/2008 23:34

I used fleece wipes with water

MsHighwater · 27/05/2008 23:36

I seem to remember being told that the "no products" guidance applied for around 4 weeks and I think that's about when we switched to wipes.

modernart · 27/05/2008 23:36

Wipes from day one except for my PFB when I followed the rules. All the other four benefited from my experience.

Wipes are horrible, they slide about and are useless for getting poo off imo and they are also far less biodegradable than cotton wool. They also have a lot of chemicals in them. Would you wipe yourself several times a day with them?
I use big square cotton wool pads and water.

jamila169 · 28/05/2008 00:15

Has anyone ever made the mistake of thinking that a baby wipe would be good at cleaning up ones own bottom in a no toilet paper situation? never again..

bluenosesaint · 28/05/2008 00:34

Mmmm its certainly a slippery slope to go down Jamila ....

aquasea · 28/05/2008 01:37

Wipes after about a week I think. The sensitive, alcohol free ones. I couldn't be doing with the cotton wool and water thing. I find wipes far better at cleaning than faffing about with cotton wool all over the place.

solo · 28/05/2008 01:48

I sneakily used wipes at 6 hours old with Dd. Got told off for using wipes at 2 days with Ds(in hospital)hence being sneaky with Dd. Personal choice me thinks

hellish · 28/05/2008 01:48

PFB - a year
NSC - about a week
