Signal change on brain mris ? Radiology experts ? Neuro

So bit of background , I am under neurology for Severe debilitating constant headachr conditions . Over the years I have had multiple mri scans during bad flairs etc privately . Recently, I had a loss of vision and was later seen at stroke clinic to rule out TIA - was concluded migraine episode . After discharge received letter with past Mri results over last 3 years and to my shock read last report which stated below statement …

I am so worried .. this has never been mentioned to me - since researching i read this area is not a common area for these changes and likely not benign - do i need to push for further tests ? Is this an issue ? What makes it worse is my headaches have never been controlled and i fear more is going on … what could this be ?

It's best to ask the quack if she thinks it's some rare type of migraine and can it be controlled

mauvishagain · 25/07/2025 11:55

Please try not to panic.

I'm not a neurologist nor a radiologist, but I used to be a medical doctor before I retired.

Whatever has caused this "signal change", it is described as "tiny" and has not changed for 3 years. Maybe it's actually been there for longer than that but not noticed prior to 3 years ago; maybe it was spotted but thought to be totally insignificant so wasn't even mentioned before that. Everything else mentioned in this report is NORMAL.

Any bodily change that has remained tiny and unchanging over several years is EXTREMELY UNLIKELY to signify anything terrible. Eg a tumour would grow!

But the only person who can really answer your questions is your specialist as none of us here is going to know more than this. But I've seen many, many reports of various sorts over a lifetime of being a doctor and I can read between the lines; and honestly, I'd be astonished if this isn't just a tiny little mark that means very little and won't cause you any harm.

I would not worry about that one little signal change at all, might just be ageing. I have LOADs of white matter lesions all over my brain! it does worry me but what can I do?

brightonchicka · 25/07/2025 13:16

@mauvishagain thanks so much for this ! Im 35 so that panicked me more as it said more associated with older people .

I had so many when i was 44 that I had to have a lumbar puncture in case it was MS! I think they were put down to small vessel disease. I am now 55, just had a new MRI but not got results, I darent!

brightonchicka · 25/07/2025 17:56

@TheBabber what unsettles me is fact ive never been told !

But you’ve now been told and you’re in actual tailspin of panic, to be fair.

It hasn’t changed in 3 years. I’d be aware but otherwise not worry.

brightonchicka · 30/07/2025 03:52

@Fordian i wasnt actually told - seen it on a med report . Which makes it worse i think !

this is a finding of no significance or consequence and it would have been pointless to share it with you, now you know about it you're distressed over nothing and will continue to mither over it for no good reason. you can kind of see why minutiae details of medical reports used to not get shared with patients. I'm sorry you're upset but you do just need to trust that your medical team know more than you do?
