ItsFridayIminLoveJS · 24/07/2025 19:42

I started pregabalin on Monday.. 75mg on a morning and 75mg at night time.. l was in hospital with cervical spondylosis with radiculopathy... a trapped nerve.. I'm allergic to ibuprofen/ asprin etc.. im having MRI in 3 weeks to see if any discs are bulging/worn down/ need removing/ replacing.. im still in pain and cant use my left side.. it's described as sciatica but from back of your neck... anyhow it's the Pregabalin im asking about.. l feel absolutely drunk.. drowsy.. sleepy.. blurred vision.. clumsy... can't get my words out.. I've used " Dr Google" says can take from a few days to few weeks for symptoms to wear off and for the medication to kick in and help with pain.. please someone reassure me this is correct... im at the end of my tether with the pain.. l really want to stick with the pregabalin if its going to work( l also have Fibromyalgia and other parts of my body with osteoarthritis) so it's suppose to help with that too.
Many thanks in advance.. and hugs to whatever you may be suffering.

Some people get used to it, some never do. If it's not working for you there are alternatives. Pregabalin is not for everyone.

I recently tried pregabalin I had everything you described I also had pins in needles everywhere including in my mouth and very slurred speech. I spoke to my psychiatrist and gp and both agreed I should stop straight away and they put it on my list of medications I react to. I found the weirdest thing was I really wasn’t concerned about feeling so out of sorts as it clearly worked well my anxiety! so annoying I couldn’t continue!

When I change my dose I get all "drunk" and uncoordinated for a day or two. Also keep clenching my jaw. But it works for the nerve pain and the pins and needles.

I have 100mg in morning 50 at lunch and 50 in evening. Don't have any of these side affects. Mine is for fibromyalgia pain. They dampen pains down a bit. Was prescribed at one point Amitrptyline and another time Gabapentin. Could not get on with either of these. Otger people i knew think they are great. Tablets affect different people in different ways. If u can't get on with them contact prescribed OP. Good luck

I was on whopping doses for Trigeminal Neuralgia... I was just how you describe... absolutely couldn't function, it was like being stupid drunk without the fun part.
It took a couple of weeks to adjust.
Now I'm on Gabapentin (cheaper once the TN was under control) and have recently had to up the dose, and am back to feeling whoozy and off balance.

Give it a chance to settle... just don't drive til it does!

Yes the side effects have gone... but unfortunately my pain hasn't.
Here's hoping.. l really don't want surgery.
I didn't like Gabapentin..

I'm also taking Pregabalin for cervical radiculopathy. My side effects were not as serious as yours but they did settle down after a while. I started out with 75 mg twice a day and then my doctor increased it to 150 twice a day. I would say it took a good month before the pain disappeared entirely. I'm in the process now of titrating back down to 75 twice a day, and see if the symptoms come back or not. Good luck!

It should work very quickly, you'd know by now if it is helping pain. I had an extended hospital stay in a specialised ward and everyone who was on pregabalin was hallucinating. As did I, this effect wears off, and it helped my pain; but if it is not helping, don't stay on it. It is a drug of abuse.

I took pregablin (aka Lyrica) for "severe" sciatica, but from memory at a lower dose than that. It was truly helpful as a cure. It took the inflammation & pain away (not immediately, it took a good week or so) and then I could start the physiotherapy plan.

Sciatica is also a trapped nerve, but your experience sounds quite different to mine!

I'd hang in there for the moment. Best of luck!

A drug of abuse?
I'm not abusing it and never will.
I was on 10mg of morphine daily before this... and 10mg of diazepam for both broken hips and pelvis.
But this cervical spondylosis with radiculopathy is worse pain than that.. least that pain didn't last as long.

It didn't work for me, it didn't take my pain away at all. I had nerve pain and inflammation right across my body, mainly legs, after a virus. I tried for 2 or 3 months but it wasn't for me.

TheFairyCaravan · 27/07/2025 23:30

I was on it for a while but had to come off it because it didn’t suit me. I put on quite a bit of weight, not fat, but swelling, and felt drunk and sleepy all the time. I take Gabapentin instead now which suits me better but I can only tolerate a very low dose.

When PP says it’s a “drug of abuse” I don’t think they mean you’re abusing it, I think they mean it’s highly addictive so if it’s not suiting you it’s best to come off it than stay on it any longer than is necessary.

My husband calls gabapentin ‘angrypentin’ as apparently it makes me horrible.

SharpLily · 28/07/2025 09:27

I've not been on preg too long (post herpetic neuralgia, femoral nerve fucked) but have decided to titrate down and wean myself off. I'm starting to have to tolerate a lot of pain but I'd rather live with that than the side effects of the drug.

At first I did well on it, it doesn't zombify me the way it does a lot of people. However I hate the sugar cravings and the tiny but significant weight gain I'm starting to notice. I'm also finding it has a horrible, dulling effect on my feelings the way a lot of people say anti-depressants do. I just don't feel strong emotions the way I should since taking it and it's not fair on my family. I'm a bit like a robot at the moment - apart from anger. That I do feel and express. I don't want to risk gabapentin for similar reasons, nor amitryptiline.

Well ive got through the first weeks.. all side effects gone..
It's starting to work.
🤞.
I am looking at surgery though.
