Pre-existing medical condition - travel insurance

Hello,
Ive posted this in travel section too - wasn’t sure where best to post as it sits over both topics.

We’re due to go away in just over three weeks.
Since booking our holiday, I’ve been diagnosed with gallstones and am on a wait list to have my gallbladder removed.
Unfortunately this now means I need to declare it on my travel insurance. 😔
Currently in my research, prices are rocketing due to this.
I have tried Staysure but it was over £700 for a WEEK 😱
Insureandgo was a little more reasonable at about £270, but help please!
Which insurance providers does anyone recommend which give coverage without being mega expensive?
(I will not skip having insurance, I’ll make sure I have adequate cover - I won’t be one of the Daily Mail JustGiving families, I just want a reasonable cost).
Thank you everyone x

If you already have insurance (& for this very reason you should) you just need to tell them & there will probably be a charge, or they won't cover this.
If you didn't take out insurance you will just have to shop around. Have you run it through compare the market or the like?

Try this site you may find one on there.

I once booked a trip while awaiting the results of a blood test, and found myself in a pickle when I then tried to buy insurance. I didn't have time to do much shopping around and got a policy from Avanti. Everything travel-related was covered, but there were major exclusions on the health side. They might cover you because you actually have a diagnosis.

Britneyfan · 21/07/2025 22:17

Try insurancewith, I have several pre-existing medical conditions and have always found them to have the best quote in the past after shopping around from companies like the ones you have mentioned who are willing to provide cover for pre-existing conditions. Of course it will also depend on where you’re going and how long for as well. The US is always going to be more expensive than France or Spain etc.

Flossflower · 21/07/2025 22:18

Did you already have insurance. Most people get it before they book their holiday.
Insurance is very expensive. The days of £100 policies are long ago. If something is likely to happen then you will be charged accordingly.

My infant son has a pre existing condition and we went with Tesco Insurance.

Unfortunately no insurance as of yet - we only booked the holiday 3 days before diagnosis 😔

I have a long list of conditions. Usually find All Clear the easiest to deal with.

SummerFeverVenice · 21/07/2025 22:20

I use AllClear. Multiple chronic health conditions and in cancer treatment.
Ask about annual multi-trip as it can be more economical than trip insurance.

dollymixedup · 21/07/2025 22:21

I have numerous conditions and paid about £60 for annual coverage with loveitcoverit.

Makingpeace · 21/07/2025 22:22

Aviva covered me for my pre-existing condition. I really struggled to find any others that would.

Moreso · 21/07/2025 22:27

Another vote for Allclear. And they were recommended by another insurance company who were unable to insure me. I can't remember the exact cost now, but it was quite reasonable.

TheBewleySisters · 21/07/2025 22:29

Another vote for AllClear.

Ginisatonic · 21/07/2025 22:33

You can still use the comparison sites even with pre existing conditions. I’ve used Avanti, staysure, boots and virgin money.

PauliString · 21/07/2025 22:39

Allclear covered me too.

And don't beat yourself up too much about not already having the insurance. I had insurance last year, rang the insurer to inform them of an extra condition about two weeks before travelling, and they cancelled the policy.

(They refunded the premium, but wouldn't cover a trip cancellation because I hadn't been advised against travel. Grr.)

I struggle with health insurance - not because of the long term condition I have but because I have regular hospital treatment so am classed as being on a waiting list - as you are.

If you can find anyone to insure you for less than the amount you were quoted then you should carefully check their exclusions and what they will cover. Many of the people who use go fund me had health insurance but it was inadequate

That’s very cheap even for someone with no medical conditions. I assume your conditions were not serious ones?

PollyCherry · 22/07/2025 07:37

I actually called stay sure and was able to negotiate mine down by getting my husband and kids their own polices. Still £120 but worth it to be covered for a year and she said it would go down again a lot once I have my final treatment or am discharged Worth an actual all and they asked questions over and above on online tool such as pain relief types.
