After 15 years on hcq and sulphasalazine they aren't cutting it any more. I start a low dose next week. I've got folic acid to take 6 days.
I do get gastric problems which they know but refused to let me go straight onto injections. My stomach is fine ATM but things like ibuprofen triggers it.
Any tips on minimising side effects?

Hi op, I can’t answer your question I’m afraid but did you know there is a helpful thread on the auto immune disease board? I can link if you would
like?

I started off with MTX tablets. Always took them at night with a glass of water and made sure I had a good meal that evening. Never had any gastric problems.

I’m on 25mg weekly and don’t have any problems, apart from feeling tired, as I take them day time. I used to inject it, but after a few years of that, my thighs are not great.

You don't take them with the meal?
I have shed loads of other tablets to take so was thinking of taking them with my meal.

No, my pharmacist - who was also on MTX for another condition - said that taking them at night a while after a good meal, but with a glass of water worked best for them and it also worked for me. I expect everyone is different but I suppose the logic is that as food takes time to be digested the tablets will not be arriving into an empty stomach.

I started on these a couple of months ago. Definitely better if I'm well hydrated all day then take with a big drink after main evening meal. I find a snack before bed helps (bit of toast or similar). Also, a sugary drink like cordial or diluted apple juice seems to reduce the nausea and headaches for me.
