He's been awake most of the night, the pattern is about an hours sleep then wake up writhing in pain and crying hard. He's not really a crier so that worries me. I've given him calpol, teething gel, milk and water and nothing helps. When he's in pain he really arches his back, I thought it might be trapped wind but rubbing his tummy and bicycling his legs hasn't helped. After about half an hour of the writhing its as if its stopped and he falls back to sleep. He hasn't got a temperature, I'm not sure whether to take him to the doc, his symptoms seem so non specific. Any clues?

could he be teething?

Tutter · 27/05/2008 06:02

if he is teething you might want to try nuofen - much better ime

HeadFairy · 27/05/2008 06:32

he's not had this problem before with ant of his teeth but i have just noticed what looks like a blood blister where one of his big top teeth is coming through so maybe thats it. I'll try the ibuprofen Tutter, thanks for that.

hmmm just rechecked his temperature and it was 34.5 in one ear and 35.5 in the other...isn't that too low? I tested the thermometer in my own ear and it read 36.5 in both ears so I figure its working ok.

Trust your instincts, phone Your GP if open yet or NHS Direct 0845 46 47

Hope he's ok

HeadFairy · 27/05/2008 14:00

thanks catchingzeds, I've got an appt this afternoon at the docs, he's just been so miserable all day, I want to rule out something more serious than teething.

How did it go?

HeadFairy · 28/05/2008 10:00

ooh what a day we had yesterday! I was on my way to the docs for his appointment and ds projectile vomited over me from his pushchair - quite an achievement I think, it's at least a foot away! Anyway, I was pretty satisfied that he had just got a bit of a tummy bug, but I still kept my appt with the doc just so she could check him over. She was concerned that as he was sick and he was refusing all fluids, plus he was a bit floppy, she recommended I take him to casualty. So five hours later, and comical attempts to get a urine sample from him (I missed it twice!) we were discharged at midnight after the consultant agreed with me, it was just a tummy bug! It was a bit of a pain, but I felt it was wrong to ignore the GP, but I do think she was being over cautious. He wasn't himself though, really quiet and just not interested in anything around him. He's much better today, he's had a breastfeed and some porridge, and he's crawling around the living room pulling everything apart so I reckon he's definitely on the mend! Thanks for concern catchingzeds!

So pleased all is fine! Always best to air on the side of caution, hope you have a few peaceful few days

HeadFairy · 28/05/2008 21:30

Oh dear, the screaming and writhing has started again. I may well have to go back to casualty, just spoken to our out of hours doctors and they've said if he wakes again and is in pain again I should go down there. Looks like another long night

Oh damn and blast, don't know what to do now. DS is asleep, keeps waking up with a squeal but he's so tired he falls asleep again pretty quickly. I called NHS direct and they put me on to an out of hours doctors service, they suggested I take him into a walk in centre at our local hospital. Thing is, he's asleep now, I don't really want to wake him. Yesterday at the hospital I kept saying I can't really tell if he's floppy cos he's shattered or because he's ill. If I wake him now I'll have the same problem. Would you take your dcs down there even if he's showing no symptoms now? The walk in centre closes at midnight and after that it's casualty? Or would you wait and see if he sleeps tonight?

TBH (being a paranoid type!) I would take him in. Babies can be floppy and sleepy because they're dehydrated or in shock. Chances are he's just sleeping off a bug and will be fine but best to be checked I think. I know it means you'll have to get him to sleep again later but better safe etc.

HeadFairy · 28/05/2008 22:53

He hasn't been sick or had diarrhoea Iate so I wasn't too concerned about loss of fluids, he's had some bm and a bit of calpol as recommended by NHSdirect. It's the pain that's more distressing (to him and me), when he gets a spasm he really squeals, but he hasn't had one for nearly 2 hours now.

Hmmm. Difficult one.

how I do hate that "shall I, shan't I?" thing.

I think I'd take him, at least you may have a better chance of a worry-free night's sleep afterwards.

Poor little chap.......and you!

catchingzeds · 29/05/2008 06:54

oh

Hope you managed to get him checked out?

HeadFairy · 29/05/2008 10:36

well after I posted he settled down a bit, I gave him his usual feed at about 11pm and he took one boob and then went back to sleep so we decided to let him sleep. He had a couple of whinges in the night but nothing major, he slept to 8.30 so I guess he was knackered. I've bf him this morning and he's had some dry toast so I think if I keep him on a bland diet for a couple of days he'll be right as rain. Famous last words eh? Thanks for the advice ladies

Oh good news HF.

Hope you both had a good day

HeadFairy · 30/05/2008 13:24

thanks cadelaide he's much better in himself, just not eating much but I'm sure that'll come back soon.
