Hello

I had a tooth extraction yesterday and my gum is like this today, does this seem normal?

Yes, perfectly normal. That’s the blood clot. I had mine out a few months back. It’s healed fully.

lilToad · 15/07/2025 17:01

Looks totally fine, I had a molar out a few years ago and it can look pretty nasty the first few weeks! It'll change colour and consistency as your blood clots and starts to harden into your new gum which it pretty amazing!

Also in case the dentist didn't tell you, don't use straws as the suction can pull the blood clot out, as long as the clot stays in you're all good. Plus I used tooth picks very gently after eating to keep the area clear of stuck food.

Thank you, i can't remember what it was like when i had 4 out when i was 14, don't think i actually noticed 🤦🏻‍♀️x

I had 4 out last week and had scrambled egg and toast that night and back to eating normally the next day.
it’ll be fine now it’s clotted.

lilToad · 15/07/2025 18:55

I was told to stay on soft food for a few days afterwards but I don't see bread being a bad idea 🤷🏼‍♀️ I also used it as a reason to consume a lot of Ben & Jerry's haha

ninjahamster · 15/07/2025 18:58

I ate normally from the next day, just on the other side. They did stitch mine though.

Mamamara · 16/07/2025 11:15

This is today, does this seem right? Almost 44 hours since extraction

Sorry I have anxiety and dentist didn't tell me what the healing process looks like so trying my best to avoid any chance of dry socket 🙈

CustardCream31 · 16/07/2025 13:32

Yeah my DH had a tooth out a few months ago and his looked like this a few days in and has healed perfectly now. Looks grim though and yeah we did panic Google lol!!

shellyleppard · 16/07/2025 13:33

Looks fine. My son had two teeth out a few weeks ago and his was exactly the same.

Looks good! All the gunk at the top is the blood clots granulation tissue. My partner had dry socket and it was quite literally a hole- you would know! Yours looks all good. I had my wisdoms out last year and was terrified of dry socket! I had soup and mash for a week 😅

Mamamara · 18/07/2025 14:25

Has the area started to dislodge or does this seem normal? I've put a picture from 7am this morning and 2pm this afternoon

Looks like that's healing ok. I had a tooth out yesterday and mine looks like your first pics.

How do you feel? My dentist said if I developed any dull aching by Monday (4 days post op) then to call him as I could be getting an infection. Mine is tender today but that's to be expected following a molar extraction.

Regarding the bread, if it's soft bread with no hard crusts, and you can chew on the other side, you should be ok. My dentist said I could eat normally today but I'm choosing to avoid anything sharp or chewy as it's still too recent and tender.

I've got some dull pain but I've looked and my gum looks bruised and it's not a pain that stops me doing anything, if it's still hurting tomorrow I'll definitely phone to get it checked, i had mine out on Monday afternoon

I just checked it again and part of the skin had come loose, is this normal? I'm currently on hold to emergency dentist as I'm stressing incase it's not healing properly, the lumpy part on the side is what dislodged

To be honest it still looks ok to me but I’m not a dentist. I remember having some bits dislodging off but the main clot was ok, I even had it where mine bled really badly and I thought I had knocked the whole clot out in the night! Turns out it was fine 😆 but I did panic so I understand. I found it beneficial to remember it heals from the bottom up, so the part near the bone heals first- that helped me stopped worrying too much about getting dry socket after a while even though I still had the clot for ages. After just over a week (I think?) the clot began to go and I was left with a dip at the back of my mouth, over the next couple months this gradually healed more and more.

That helps so much thank you, i didn't realize it healed from the bottom up, i'm nearly a week post op and it's still slightly bruised and aching but was told thats normal for some people, i think it was the fact i could see the hole in my gum that made me panic most but the dentist is gonna check it over for me anyway just to ease my mind about it

The blood clot dislodged after an extraction I had a couple of years ago. I ended up with an infection & dry socket. Treated quickly by the dentist; but trust me, if you develop either of those you’ll know!

Hope all’s healing well.

What should i look out for with infection or dry socket?

Where the blood clot had dislodged the area started to turn a greenish/black colour. My mouth tasted horrible, & instead of a gradual healing feeling the area was increasingly sore.

It was never as painful as a terrible toothache, although I’ve read that dry socket can be that way for some people. The pain however just kept on increasing so I knew something was going wrong.

The dentist cleaned the area, packed it with something that tasted of clove & gave me antibiotics. It started to feel better very quickly & I’ve had no problems since.

If you’re concerned you’re doing the right thing in asking the dentist to have a quick look.

SparklyGlitterballs · 19/07/2025 15:47

How is it now OP? I'm a few days behind you and mine is starting to look more like yours now. It's still very tender. My mouth gets a horrible taste in it occasionally too. Let us know how you get on at the dentist.

I'm not entirely sure I'm still waiting for the dentist to phone but it's stressing me out not knowing if it's healing correctly, I've just had skin come away completely and there's now a hole so think I may have to phone them again 🙃

You do nothing. It’s fine. It’s not skin. It’s just part of the healing process
