I have not one but TWO of these hideous things on my face!!
the one on my nostril is possibly beyond help but the one that has decided to gestate on my bottom lip may be helped .. i hope.

I don;t have any Zovorax at home, but i need to get this growth sorted asap.. as i tonight as i have a huge family wedding on Saturday and can not appear in family photos with 2 boogers on my face!!

This is tragically funny, but i seriously need help... NOW.

a bit of tea tree oil might help for tonight if you have some.

MascaraOHara · 25/05/2008 22:49

compede patches.. they are wonderful. I will never go back.

I tend to wear them at night as not great for eating and drinking with but my god they are magical

yeah tea tree oil is good, also if you have an aloe vera plant or aloe vera gel, that's fab at helping the skin to heal. I get them lots so I feel your pain

Mine · 25/05/2008 22:57

just done some research on the net and read that if i pop it and put nail polish remover after numbing it with ice it will help speed up the 'healing' process..... just done it..... now i'm thinking it might just work if i put some toothpaste on it over night .

i don;t have any tee tree oil or anything that is remotely homeopathic/holistic (which ever is the right term for these things..)

God they are hideous!
Thanks for the quick tips x

Owww! Did it sting?

FloriaTosca · 25/05/2008 23:07

ditto mascaraohara..Compede plasters are magic! Hide it, stop the discomfort and heal all at the same time!

mckenzie · 25/05/2008 23:16

also, if you really want to do everything possible to make sure they are gone, get to the chemist tomorrow and buy some Lysine supplements. Or go to your doctors on tuesday and get some Aciclovir tablets (if he/she will prescribe them for you - they are quite expensive I believe). And lay off nuts as they have a very low lysine/arginine ratio (you want to eat foods with more Lysine than arginine. If you suffer regularly it might be worth checking this out in more detail. You can find a list on the internet of foods to eat and foods to avoid. If you look and can't find it let me know and I'll drag it out of my dusty archives).

Hate these ugly disgusting things. Managed to start getting them about 3yrs ago - poss from pub glass?! Anyway, I've tried them all believe me - the toothpaste, nail polish remover (and yes it does sting like mad!), Zovirax and even a homeopathic one which burned them off!!! Think this might be a personal thing to find what works for you.

Any pharmacist worth their salt will tell you not to buy Zovirax when the sore is 'out' as it does only really work at the 'tingle' stage for some people. I was recommended Cymex a couple of years ago (yellow tube) and it really does clear mine up quicker without making it wet and soggy which takes longer to heal. Although its a cream it kinda dries them out therefore speeding up healing process. AND it doesn't sting! Try it if this doesn't work it's only about £3 (over half the price of Zovirax BTW) . And i'll be honest diet helps but since i started with this i don't seem to get them as often cos it's usually when you are stressed or run down. But they always appear when you most need them to stay away!! You have my sympathies.

Hope they clear up before the wedding for you though. It is possible!

Mine · 26/05/2008 16:49

ok, i popped it last night and squeezed all the fluid out as much as possible... this was a bit painful i must say but the nail poloish wasn;t as bad as i thought.....
The one on my lip is ok now, but still getting a nice crust on it, but the one on my nostril needs a passport allll of its own!

I'm not sure what to do... i only have 4 days....

Sorry not a quick fix, but dh swears by the cold sore zapper (virulite).
www.vcs.eu.com/

He has only had 3 cold sore since he got one 5 years ago. He used to get about 4 a year.

He had to buy one, but I think they may be available on prescription now.

Starlightmckenzie - similar names, both get cold sores and use the lysine/diet control method and I see that we also live in the same area - I wonder if we know each other in RL?

I was the same when I was pregnant SM and since my second pregnancy I haven't had even one coldsore (I shouldn't have said that huh? I bet I get one now!)
I watch my diet vis a vis lysine and arginine but luckily for me, my GP has been really understanding over the years and I have had long periods of daily acyclovir when things have been really bad. Mine is definitely stressed related though too. (I live in EN2 by the way).

smartiejake · 26/05/2008 19:20

Another vote for the virulite machine. I used one for the first time this weekend on a real whopper . I used no cream and today after three days use I have one small dried up blister which never really came out. I have been known to get cold sores monthly and am hoping that this will lessen the frequency.

As for creams the very best one I have found is Fenestil. Works super quick and if you catch it in time it prevents them coming out altogether.

Other remedies I have tried(and there have been many!) include liquorice balm, silica gel (very good), lemon balm teabags (drink and apply) and rescue remedy applied on the blisters.

Mine · 26/05/2008 19:35

EN2 as in Enfield...??

mckenzie · 26/05/2008 20:03

Mine · 26/05/2008 22:40

I fear i'll be marked with this beast of a growth at the wedding on saturday..... oh the photos......

The best thing I've found is L-Lysine. You can get them in a health food store. The tablets are huge, but really effective. I've found that the sores don't develop int blisters and are generally gone in 3-4 days. It may be too late this time round though but maybe worth a try.

I woke up with a sore on New Year's Day and was away, so couldn't get any L-Lysine. The compeed patches were OK, they stopped it hurting and it didn't look too bad, but I didn't find them that effective.
