Bee sting - normal reaction? (Pic)

Was stung by a bee on my inner thigh 4 days ago. There was a little bump (like 5p size) for a few hours but then disappeared. No pain or itching until today I noticed a light itch and found to my surprise the area is all red. Its not really swollen or hot, just red and a bit itchy.
I'll try to get a GP appointment this afternoon, but in the meantime has anyone experienced this or know what it is? Could it be cellulitis?

I would probably take an antihistamine and not really think about it again. I wouldn't go to the doctor unless the redness spread and it got really swollen.

If it was a bee, is the stinger still in there?

As a child I was stung and it was only the next day at school that the nurse removed the stinger for me, as my teacher noticed something was wrong with me. It was in the back of my thigh, so sitting on the hard school chair was especially sore.

I also agree with antihistamine, pills and/ or cream. Hydrocortisone cream would be a helpful alternative.

I wouldn't bother a GP with it at this stage.

@CatsorDogsrule I was wondering that but there’s no pain, and no sting that I can feel at least not on the surface.

That's very red. When I was stung a couple of years ago it was only red for around a day. It was very sore but didn't have that level of redness.

I think I would draw a line around it to see if it's spreading, shrinking or staying the same. I'd also apply hydrocortisone and take anti histamines.

If it's spreading I'd see a GP. My concern would be cellulitis. If it's staying the same then I'd go and see a pharmacist.

Are you sure it was a bee sting? No pain or itching until day 4 sounds unusual. I had a bee sting last summer and it was very painful immediately and for several days afterwards even though I pulled the sting out straight away.

NegroniMacaroni · 07/07/2025 14:44

@ImFineItsAllFine sorry i meant it’s not painful now - ive pressed and felt around to see if i could feel any stinger but i didnt feel anything and theres no pain now. It was v painful for an hour or so after the sting yes, and i saw a bee fly away so assume it was a bee.

Ive sent the pic to the GP and due a phone call.
Thinking about it Im pretty sure I had a similar reaction to mosquito bites quite a few years ago, so maybe thats just how my body reacts.

Dh is a bee keeper and no that’s not a usual reaction.

Walker1178 · 07/07/2025 15:12

Not a normal reaction and it’s how I found out I was allergic to bee stings! Even with anti-histamine I had a red mark like yours visible for nearly 6mths
