im really fed up with contact lenses and glasses im thinking of having laser surgery but am really sqeamish when it comes to eyes. Has any one had it done was it really painful or uncomfortable and are you happy with the results. Ive read that your eyesight can stil deteriorate afterwards and you may need to go back to glasses was this the case for you. I would love to have 20/20 vision and if the results are worth it i hopefully overcome my fear and have it done.

I had it done in Nov, worth every penny was FANTASTIC!!!

went in at 10am, 45secs each eye, no pain, left looking through a white fog, went to bed till 2pm, fog graually lifted throughout the day, cleared and allowed to drive again 10am the next day

no pain/discomfort at all

thingamajig · 25/05/2008 20:46

Had it done 18 months ago, a bit sore for a few days, but now I have perfect sight, would thouroughly reccommend it.

saffy202 · 25/05/2008 21:26

I had it done in March this year. I now have better than 20/20 vision. Best thing I have ever done

plusone · 26/05/2008 13:17

oh that sounds promising and the presedure is def very quick?

Oooh, I've been thinking about doing it too but am squeamish about eyes - think it's the prospect of having my eyes clamped open that freaks me out - tell me it's not that bad??

nervousal · 26/05/2008 13:35

I'd be frightened that I would move my eye and that I'd end up blind.... How do you keep your eyes still? (oh - and how much was it??)

CaptainCaveman · 26/05/2008 13:40

Had mine done nearly 2 years ago now and still have perfect vision. Deffo worth every penny. I had lasik with wavefront, had it done at Optical Express. They were very professional, great care before, during and after. Total procedure from putting drops in to finishing off took about 10 mins. Actual lasering bit took about 20 secs per eye. No pain. Mild discomfort a couple of hours later, a bit like stinging tired eyes. Paracetamol and sleep worked fine.

My eyes were a little dry for a month or so after, but this had always been a problem for me and stopped me wearing contact lenses for more than 4 hours at a time anyway - so it didn't trouble me and was easily resolved with eye drops.

A colleague had it done about 10 years ago and has since gone back to glasses but remember, the technology advances all the time so her lasering would have been less specific than whats on offer today (ie. they can make your vision more accurate)

Hi Dizzy!!

CaptainCaveman · 26/05/2008 13:44

Cost was 2K

Eyes are numbed with anaesthetic drops so you don't feel them being clamped open, and your vision is blurred from the drops. I could 'see' albeit very blurry! Actual clamping is for less than one minute.

The laser detects eye movement so if you did move your eye it would automatically shut off.

ScienceTeacher · 26/05/2008 13:48

I had it done five years ago.
It wasn't at all painful and I am very happy with the results.
It is amazing, tbh.

plusone · 26/05/2008 14:47

yeah the clamping does freak me out. 2k seems alot more then i thought it was thought it was about £400 per eye. I just cant overcome the fear of them poking something in my eye. Did anyone have any side effects like migraines?

I wear contact lenses overnight that alter the shape of my cornea subtly so I can see during the day. See here for a review of them

Worth considering if you have an optician nearby that offers them.

kid · 26/05/2008 14:56

I would love to have the laser treatment done but am a complete wimp!
A friend had it done and a side effect that she has is a glare from lights.
I get it anyway when I am wearing my glasses, but she has it all the time.

I tried contact lenses once and almost passed out, they felt awful!

saffy202 · 26/05/2008 15:08

Mine cost £2.5k. The price depends on your prescription. I had lasik with wavefront, which bumped up the price a bit, also at Optical Express. I'm paying over 10 months interest free.

ScienceTeacher · 26/05/2008 15:51

Plusone,
They gave me a valium tablet before the op but I was still very reticent to have the clamp put it. They then gave me a teddy bear, called Seymour, and that did the trick.

The whole thing is over so quickly.

ScienceTeacher · 26/05/2008 15:56

kid,
Haloing is the main serious side-effect, and it is exclusely experienced by those people with very high prescriptions (>-7) or those people with larger than average pupils. The place I had mine done would not accept clients who were at high risk of side effects.

The main temporary side effect is dryness of the eyes, for which you can use saline drops. I didn't suffer this at all, but it is common to need drops for about a month.

You use antibiotic eye drops before and after the op, and they use anaesthetic during it.

dizzydixies · 26/05/2008 17:44

price depends on your prescription and what treatment you have, I had the same as Cavey so it cost more

Optical Express were fantastic, it took no time at all and I was checked again the next day, next week and I think fortnight after

your eyes are numbed with drops and from what I remember its not a clamp but a suction thing I had, after procedure you have 3 lots of drops to use for a wee while but I had no pain and no problems

I was also approx £2.5k but worth aboslutely every penny and this from a girl who can't even go to the dentist without feeling faint

can I just say one thing to those considering it - go and get a free consultation to see if you are eligible for it - some people aren't for various reasons, the tests are free, quick and painless and THEN you can start deciding whether or not to have it done

not point mulling it over and getting all brave only to turn up and be told you can't have it done

Flier · 26/05/2008 22:07

I got it done around 3years ago. as other have said, best thing I have ever done. the treatment itslef was a breeze, and I was pretty squeamish where my eyes were concerned! Its not so much a pain afterwards, its like really really bad stinging, like when you've shampoo in your eyes, but well worth it. I was told that everyones eyes deteriorate as they get older so you will possibly need reading glasses when you get older.

I used optimax, and they sometimes sell on ebay to reduce their costs. I paid around £1000 for both eyes.
In fact, here's a link to ebay. here This is how I paid for mine, and my friend did it this way too, so can 100% vouch for it.
